  • Just a quick one.

You know what I hate? On our website for ordering we have message at the top that says "free shipping on all orders $24 and up," the key word there being shipping. Anyways, I hate how people that want to buy at 56" TV think that that size television is going to be small enough to ship. What, do you think we have a magical machine that shrinks things down to envelope size, so that we can stuff in your mailbox! No! 56" is a huge TV! Do you honestly think FedEx is going to deliver something that large and heavy for absolutely free!? HELL NO!

Grrr...customers should really learn how to read. *grumbles*

I can understand how that sort of thing could be misleading, but come on, a TV that big is going by fraight, not standard shipping.

Mmm, I hate to say this, but I would have questioned it also. Not sure if there is additional information listed by the words "free" (and every knows SC don't read), but the website should clearly spell it out.

I'm going to have to pipe in alongside bainsidhe here - I wasn't aware that shipping only referred to items of a certain size, I always thought it was a catch-all term (and there are companies big enough to offer free shipping on something as large as a TV. I understand yours doesn't, but it could easily be misconstrued)

I'm gonna have to agree with bainsidhe and fish3K1, too. Unless there are restrictions listed, I'm sure a 56" TV costs more than $24 so that would imply free shipping.

Then one thing I suppose I should've mentioned is when you add such a large item to your cart, it shows in the total section "Delivery Fee." Shipping and delivery are two seperate animals. Now on select TVs (mostly the big names: Sony, Samsung, etc.), we offer free basic delivery, and $20 for premium. But on the lower end, typically there's going to be a $54.99 delivery charge. I just don't get how most customers just don't want to CLICK ON THE F'in LINK for all the info they need to know. They decide it's better to call me and proceed to bitch me out when I tell them what they don't want to hear.

even with the wording, i'd still have not expected a large item to be shipped for free, especially one that requires special handling (easily damaged items).

we all know they can't read, because then they'd have to see the print that denies them what they think they're entitled to!

We sell lots of big things; tables, tubs, kennel banks... You would be surprised how many people think those go free at certain amounts. We do advertise free shipping after $XXX, and customers assume, without reading the actual offer mind you, that this includes the two thousand dollar kennel banks. And most of these have some sort of notation as to their exclusion from the policy.

I can see where LambChop's frustration is from.

If it says "free shipping on orders of at least $24 for anything through FedEx or UPS," or "free shipping on orders of at least $24 (delivery fees not included)," then it's fine.

If it just says ""free shipping on orders of at least $24" and doesn't say that it only covers actually shippable items or that it excludes delivery items, I could totally see how it would be misleading.

Shipping is shipping, even when the shipping is done in-house by your own drivers and covers things up to container-load. After all, those TVs had to be shipped to the distributor in the first place.

Just comfort yourself with the knowledge that even if they had put:

RESTRICTIONS APPLY, PLEASE ASK FOR DETAILS!!!

They would STILL have expected it.

Although I suppose it's easier if you have some sort of disclaimer to fall back on, even if it's obscure and even it we know they don't read it.

                      Not to me.

If "free shipping on all orders $24 and up" is all the banner at the top of the page says, then it could easily be misunderstood. And even though you may have links to terms and disclaimers, people don't always read those.

Unless there's more here, I'm not surprised people are getting confused and frustrated. A 56-inch TV costs a lot more than $24. Methinks your company needs to change the wording on that banner so it leaves less room for confusion.

Sounds like the OP is splitting hairs to me. When someone says "shipping" I think "get the item to my house".

And, yes, I have had a 50" plasma TV shipped to my house. It came via freight truck. But, the average person does not make such fine distinctions between "shipping via UPS/FedEx" and "shipping via freight".

Clearly, your webmaster needs to clue in and re-word that misleading bit of text.

                          I am not a lawyer.

But I act like one with regards to my website.

Basically I read my website with the idea that somebody does not KNOW what I am talking about and I must explain that socks are sold in pairs, manure is priced per bag but bag weights must be disclosed because not every brand of cow shit comes in the same size bag, TVs weigh more than 1 lb and some idiot might think he can lift the 88" plasma all by himself, shipping rates on these 9 items are included in the price of the item for normal delivery locations and Mackinaw Island is not a normal delivery place... especially in the winter.

Free shipping with purchases over $24 would include truck delivery. Shipping and delivery are similar terms and can include freight shipments.

The title should read free shipping on SELECT purchases over $24 or some other lawyer crapola to prevent customers from assuming all items are included.

You forgot that anytime the word Free is mentioned SC's think that it not only applies to one thing, but EVERYTHING. When I worked for an online pet med company, We did free shipping for orders that were $39 or more, with the exception of medications that needed to be chilled. The chilled medications were the ones that were shipped via Fed Ex for a fee and I can't tell you how many times I had SC's bitch about that. There's something called fine print and restrictions READ THEM and like hell Fed Ex is gonna ship something like that for free.
