  • Endless Parade of Stupid Online!

One of the things that sucks the most about the customers were I work are the online customers who don't read any of the info on the website then call up to bitch that they were somehow hoodwinked even if they had to click on the "YES" button for various things. People misunderstand times of delivery, etc and call up to complain about their own stupidity.

One sc called asking for a discount because when the flowers arrived the card message was misspelled even though it was an online order and the florist printed the card right from her submission. I pointed out again and again that we do not give a discount if you are a poor speller.

Many people call to whine and complain that they have a recurring monthly charge from us that they never authorized and I have to explain to them that it is for our online discount program, that they would have had to have scrolled through the terms and conditions and clicked "YES" no less than four times to be enrolled in the program. They still claim they were hoodwinked, at least until I pull up the page and read them what it says in bold print.

I used to get women calling and complaining about stuff like that all the time when I worked at a catalogue call center. Women would place an order online, and at the end it would offer them a savings program where they have a 30 day trial period, and then if you don't cancel, you get charged $99.95. I know, I hated the crap, too. But it does say ALL of that very clearly, and anyone can say no from the begininning and be done.

But we'd get women calling in "Why the F-CK did you charge my card $99.95!!?" We check and explain that they agreed to the program during an online order and didn't cancel it.

"WELL I DIDN'T REEEEAAAAD IT!!!!! THIS IS BULLSHIT!!!"

Uh.....what do you want me to tell you? Read before you agree, dumbass!
"What size can I get you, ma'am?"
    "Red."
"Okay...I'll check the red for you, but what size do you need?"
    "RED!"
    "..."

Mhmmm. It amazes me that people don't seem to understand that you are rarely ever going to get something for free. Something costs $100, but they're offering you a $20 optional discount? Gee, I wonder why they'd be offering a 20% discount that's optional - if it really was a straight up sale, it'd been automatic.

Do you really think that freecreditreport.com is going to give you a credit score for absolutely nothing? They're going to give you something they have to pay for free? Really?

Do you think your credit card company really just gives you a random check for $100? Of course not. By cashing that check, you are enrolled in a program that costs you money, you're basically getting X months of that service for free knowing that you'll continue to pay for it down the line (and not because you'll love that service, but because you'll be to lazy to cancel it).

These are not benevolent entities, they want to make money. You are not special. They aren't going to give you a random discount or free stuff without a very good reason. Always deny the optional crap when buying something, especially if it's billed as being free or giving you a discount, 90% of the time it's just going to cost you more money.

A mantra to live by: If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

Those free credit services are the worst. You are agreeing that they can use ALL data gathered and sell it at their whim.

Not even that, for freecreditreport.com, you have to enroll in a different program which costs money. When I did it years ago, because I was too dumb to realize that I could get the report for free once a year directly from the credit bureaus, I had to pay $10/month for the service that came with the "free" credit report.

How do you think they pay for those cool ads on TV?

It never ceases to amaze me simply how neglectful or down right stupid people can be when it comes to doing something online verses offline. It seems like no one reads things anymore (...though I am guilty of this as well, but if it is something like what you are describing you definitely read it online where all of your given info can drift away without a sound).

Man, I hate this stuff and I've been suckered, err, mistaken..myself. I know the OPs thread states their website spells everything out clearly, which I appreciate. But the "optional" discounting mentioned in the above quote and similar misleading gotchas should be prohibited. I've signed up for the "complementary 30 day trial" without seeing anywhere ANYWHERE where you would be billed after 30 days. It's somewhere in the fine print I'm sure, but not clearly labeled because I wouldn't sign up otherwise. Bad bad companies who support this type of misleading advertising.

A mantra to live by: If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
Too, too true. See also: the old "There's no such thing as a free lunch" applies to EVERYTHING, not merely lunches.

Paraphrased from the Randy Milholland's webcomic Something Positive:

Davan: So, what do I owe you?
Jason: Come on, Davan, I'm treating you to a free lunch here!
Davan: That's usually the most expensive kind.
