  • A Special Place In Hell

Argh, this isn't funny, just infuriating and I simmer whilst I type it. Be warned.

One of the things I handle here at night is stuff for the city districts. Normally things like broken water mains or trees down over roads during storms, etc. But I also handle animal welfare and the animal shelter after hours...

I received a call from the RCMP a just a little while ago regarding a stray dog. Apparently this is what happened:

Some fester douche mold of a couple were out taking a late night walk when they found a stray dog. The dog had a collar and was on a walking leash. So even the most casual observer would come to the correct conclusion: The owner was walking the dog and the dog got away from him or her. Now, a normal person coming across this dog would probably do one of three things:

    1) Report the dog to the local shelter/animal welfare/SPCA who can check the collar and return it to the owner.
    2) Pick the dog up, check the collar and return it to the owner.
    3) Pick the dog up and drop it at the local shelter or SPCA where they can check the collar or ID chip and return it to its owner.

That would be the normal response, right? Of course. However, that response only applies to people who aren't ignorant assholes.

This pair of crotch sores saw the dog and figured "Oh hey, someone lost a dog." so they picked the dog up, did not check the collar, took the dog over to the side of the street, tied him to the phone pole then left him there and went home. Where at some point some time later they remembered the dog and called the RCMP to tell the RCMP "Oh hey, we tied a dog to a pole, go get him."

The RCMP dispatcher, obviously baffled and horrified that these nimrods picked up someone's dog and just tied it to a pole in the middle of no where then had the gale to call her and tell her to come get it, asked the obvious question I'm sure you're thinking: Why the heck did you do that?

"Oh, well we didn't want him just wandering the street."

Indeed. They didn't want him to even touch the street apparently as they indicated they had tied him tight enough to the pole to stop him from reaching the street. So they left only him with about 3 feet worth of leash tops ( According to them. Yes, they specifically said they tied him really close and he didn't have much leeway to move so he couldn't get to the curb. Part of the reason they did this seems to be to make the RCMP come get the dog faster as they warned the dispatcher a few times that the dog had little room to move so they should come pick him soon. )

But it gets better. When I asked the dispatcher for the address.....well the fuckheads didn't give her one. They gave her a street name and a rough area of several city blocks and told her "Oh you'll see him when you drive by."

    <twitch>

Now animal welfare isn't up to the RCMP obviously, not that they didn't want to go get the poor thing. But its Friday night so they're already completely jammed up dealing with, well, law enforcement. Thus they're calling me.

Now I get to sit here and try and find an animal welfare officer who's still awake that can go drive around aimlessly in this neighbourhood trying to find this poor dog. They don't normally work this late at night so I have little choice but to keep going down my list over and over till I wake one up. Which is unlikely as they only have company cells which are usually turned off this late because, well, normally no one is stupid enough to tie a dog to a pole and leave it there till 3am.

I don't know how long he's been out there so far but it looks like he's going to be out there for a while yet thanks to these two assholes.

I would ask WTF is wrong with people, but I've worked with them long enough to know the answer. WHO in their RIGHT MINDS would TIE A DOG TO A PHONE POLE?!?!?!?! And, to think, one day, these people may breed.

Y'know, if ya tie a person to a pole/fencepost and leave them there, that would be called a hate crime provided they were a different color than you and you didn't know them. What would these *car horn*s do if they found a lost child wandering the streets???

Well, obviously there's no comparison between a person or a lost child and an animal.

Some people do not feel about animals in the same way that others do. To some people, animals are just animals and nothing more.

That being said, what they did was so incredibly stupid. They would have been better to just let the dog roam if all they were going to do was tie him to a pole, with very little freedom to move, in the middle of nowhere.

They probably thought they were being ever so helpful.

Poor little dog. I hope they find him.

Yes, at least it could have wandered home if so inclined. Now it's stuck there till 8am as that's the earliest I can get an animal welfare officer there. So it'll have been there for at least 8 or more hours by the time I can get someone to him thanks to these two twits.

I'm wondering: in your state, would that be considered animal cruelty?

What thoughtless idiots! That poor dog it is probably scared out of its mind. Doesn't it even have enough length on the leash to lie down? I hope it turns out okay. I don't even know what I'd do if someone did that to my dog

                Seriously

don't people understand animal cruelty? do they just not understand that tying a dog to a pole with less than 3 feet of leash is just, well, stupid?!?

and I realize that they might have been trying to do the right thing, but they should know not to do what they did!

The owner probably found it by now.

Look on the bright side, the story could have ended the way I originally thought it would after reading her intro:

That they took said dog by the leash, tied him to the towhitch on their car, and drove away. I'm happy because the story didn't end THAT way.....

I think I'll stick with the hope that someone more SANE found him and returned him by now. >-<

This is why I can't work with animals. If I had just had to deal with the animals, everything would be fine. It's the douchebags that seem to think animals aren't worthy of humane treatment that drive me over the edge.

It's also the same reason I can't work in daycares anymore. Over a decade in childcare, plus a few more nannying and I never had a serious problem with a child. The parents on the other hand were driving me bonkers. I had to get out before I found myself bitchslapping sense into some of the idiot parents. I swear it got worse as the years went by.

These people couldn't even be bothered to remember the frigging address of the business/home where left the poor dog tied up? The dog was obviously friendly enough to let these people come up to him, then they leave him tied up? That just breaks my heart.

Gotta play devil's advocate on this one.

Tying the dog to a permanent object (lamp pole etc) in regular sized towns is actually acceptable. Most of the time the owner is running up the street looking for the dog and it would be better to fix the dog to a specific location than taking the dog further from the owner and possibly out of site of the owner.

BUT leave the dog some damn leash. And call LE /dog catcher etc right away. Better yet, go check on the dog in an hour and take it home with you if nobody has found it yet.

BTW, I was in my car and found a dog with leash wandering a residential street. I tied him to a small tree in somebody's front yard and then drove around the neighborhood until I found the dog owner frantically searching for the dog. Owner and dog are happy.
