Couple rants from the computer store here.

    Parking
Little background first. My store is in a strip mall and sits between a Yoga studio and a Tai Chi studio. There is also a ladies gym further down the strip. In the past, these had been problems, with people parking in front of our store and going in for their several hour long classes. Then we put up a big sign up in front of the store saying that parking was for our customers only. This mostly cut down the problems. Mostly.

We still get the occasional person, most often for yoga, and most often on Saturday mornings, as their classes start before the shop is open. But that is another rant. What is really infuriating me at the moment is the customers for the tailor shop that is a few doors down. Often, they will park in front of our shop and go in to either drop off or pick up their clothes. They are usually less then 10 minutes. However, they are ignoring a big sign, taking up our parking, and not coming into our shop, all on the "it's okay, I'll only be a minute." It's not okay. What if one of my customers comes and needs to park there. (Many of our customers are elderly, and often need to bring in equipment).

I am trying to get my boss to keep a towing company on speed-dial, but as of yet, it hasn't happened. We'll see though.

I'll call you when it's ready
The other infuriating thing that happens here is when people just stop by to see if their stuff is done, after I've told them explicitly that I will call them when it is ready/I need to know something from them. This is especially bad when I don't have it done, have not called them, they have driven out from one of the farming communities on the outskirts of town, and they get mad at me for not calling them and telling them not to come out. (This actually happened once. The lady involved has a tendency to do this, but, fortunately, is a good customer otherwise.)

The reason that I bring this up is because of what happened yesterday (Saturday). On Saturdays, we open at 10, and I was running a little late, so I didn't actually get to the store to open up until about 9:58. I had unlocked the door, and was making my way to the back, checking to see what the boss had left for me to work on, when the door chimed, indicating that someone had come in. Keep in mind that at this point, the store lights were off, and the closed sign was up in the window. They may have seen me moving around inside, but it should have been obvious that I was not ready to open yet. (At this point, it may have been about 10:02, so enough margin of error for clocks to be set wrong.) That was the first sign.

They brought a computer in with the coupon that we've been putting out lately. The coupon is good for a computer cleaning and analysis (Virus/Spyware Scan and Hardware Diagnostics.) On a good day, this will probably take about 3-4 hours to get done properly. So, she asks me when I think it will be ready. I tell her probably not until Monday. (We're closed Sunday). She comes back to me with she had talked to the boss the day before, and he said that it would take a couple hours. (I haven't talked to him yet, but he knows better than this.) At this point I'm taken somewhat aback, so I stammer out a bit of an explanation, including, "it depends on what exactly is wrong with it", and ending with "I'll call you once I know something."

The story can't end here, of course. On Saturday, we're open until 2. I use that time to run the diagnostics and the virus scan. At about 20 past one, she stops in. At that point its not ready (as evidenced by the fact that I hadn't called), but it is going smoothly, so I tell her to come back in half an hour. Fortunately, I get it done by then, and manage to sell her on a ram upgrade, so its not a total loss.

What I'm thinking to propose to the boss here, is a policy of if you show up before we call you, it will be at least another hour before its finished. It doesn't matter if the computer is done, and I'm picking up the phone to call you when you walk in the door, it will be another hour, and I'll call you when its ready.

Sounds like my local computer store. They have 3 or 4 bays in a small commercial lot shared with a few other random stores (Pool/Spa Shop, Electrical Repairers, and a Door Shop I think) and whenever I stop by I can never, ever get a bay even if their is nobody in the shop >_< No sign mind you, so obviously nobody has told them its hard to park their, or they're just parking on the side of the road.

Have the same problem. They use MY parking lot to park in and the walk ACROSS a 4 lane highway to go to McD's. And worse they park in my DRIVEWAY. It may not look like a driveway as it is 60' wide (about 4 street lanes), but the darn thing is actually a wide driveway so we can have 1 tractor and trailer unit (18 wheeler) entering while another one is trying to exit and not clog up the highway with trucks making wide right turns.

Stupid people look at the big driveway and think "parking lot".

Hey stupid, there are no parking lot markings, that means it ain't a parking lot.

A couple weeks ago the local FD was using the driveway as a turn around when they had missed their turn on another street. The good news was no SC car was present.

Darn. I wish there had been a SC car in the driveway. I can just imagine the shock on the SC face looking at their crumbled car with a bag of McD's in hand, saying "I was just gone for a minute".

My repair stuff is 1 week from when you drop it off.

Yes, it is a 1,2, 3, 5, 10 or whatever hour job. Yes we are going to do it promptly.

But every employee in the building is only authorized to tell a customer "1 week from when you drop it off".

If we get it done early, we might call. There are no rush orders, no going in front of others and no checking to see when it might be done because the standard answer is "1 week from when you drop it off". Any time the customer asks it is "1 week from when you drop it off".

Pisses some people off. But what the heck, it is sure a lot better than somebody calling on Friday and asking if something could be done by Wednesday to which the employee agrees thinking the item will be brought in that very day and then SC shows up late on Tuesday to drop the item off for Wednesday completion on a 14 hour repair job.

GUILTY. Sadly, enough. But I didn't expect it to be rush-job because after I took my computer in I found out the NEXT DAY that Bossman was sending away and I needed my computer. The company held onto it for a week before they even looked at it. They asked up front if I needed it for a paper (College right in the next town and I'm "college-age" but I don't attend) and I had said no, so they didn't bother with it. I wasn't sucky about it, but oddly enough I got a hell of a lot better service once they found out I was gay (I was wearing my rainbow flag pin, is how they found out) and then they treated me like family.

Dude, NO ONE is ever gone "just a minute" at a Micky D's. Why people continue to eat there is beyond me.

Well, not necessarily. As usual, it depends on the customer's attitude. If I happen to be in the neighborhood a few days later and the employees aren't imitating frantic worker ants, I'll ask the employee "to check on the status" for me. More than once my whatever has been fixed already and the workers just hadn't had a chance to call me yet. So I've saved them a phone call and myself a trip out there. Now I don't expect my gidget to be ready immediately and I thank the employee for their time, which is why I'm not a SC. So please don't tar us all with the same brush

I apologize for that. One thing that I forgot to mention, we're a relatively small shop, so normally we can get things turned around in about 24 hours. It becomes very frustrating when people come in within that time, (in the quoted case, less than 4 hours), and expect it to be done, unless I've told them that it will be done within that time.

We take the old engineer's trick and quadruple our estimates from what we actually think it will take, because unexpected stuff happens. Often.

That's when I tell people "A minute is just long enough for the tow truck to get here!" Nomally they shoot me the bird, but they do move!

Ah, so you have a very different time scale. That makes more sense. And yeah, demanding special services and considerations are just one of the many ways

I once took a old computer in for a cleaning cause I wanted to reuse the case. Got a frantic call from the shop from when they opened it up and desturbed a nest of baby mice. They carefully closed it back up and I rushed to get back there and put it right back where I found it. Now I don't like mice but they keep moles out of the barn...that and it's fun sitting on a rafter and watching the barn cats hunt.
