  • But it hurts! (long)

I don't remember ever posting this...

I was approaching my last week at the Maxx. I was going to work Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, go home on Thursday, and go out with old friends on Friday to celebrate my birfday!!! It was going to be awesome. So, Sunday, I hop out to get a bite to eat. My steps are pretty crooked (the foundation of the house is really messed up). Anyway, I hit a step weird, my foot turns under me, and I hear (and feel) a succession of pops. I rotate my foot around, wiggle all my toes - it's not broken. I go ahead and get my food, then investigate the damage. I have a large, greenish-blue knot on the top of my foot close to the ankle. I do a lot of looking around on the internet, and determine that I've sprained my ankle.

    Ducky.

I have no brace, but my roomate has an icepack. I take the belt of my bathrobe and bind it all up as best I can and debate what to do.

I want to leave the company on a high note. Those three days I'm scheduled for markdowns - we were already massively behind on markdowns and district was breathing down our neck. I decide to go in, and explain the situation to my manager and see how we can work it out.

I go in, and it's the nice but stupid manager. She puts me on shoes, and gets me a chair to kind of put my foot on while I scan. She also tells the cashiers to leave me alone (markdown people usually get called to do price checks and suchlike.) The day is pretty uneventful. Manager even lets me go to Target on the clock to get a proper brace. At the end of the day, though, my foot is throbbing and swollen.

I ask if the next day, I could leave a little early and not take a lunch. I argue that I'm getting in almost as much work and that it would be a lot easier on my wounded body. She agrees. She makes a note for the mean AM coming in tomorrow.

Well, mean AM throws a fit about me leaving early, but lets me do it. But she makes such a big deal about it that I decide to work my full shift on Wednesday, my last day. The whole day, the mean AM and the store manager give me a lot of shit. Basically, they don't believe I've hurt myself. I was . I had a whole 3 days left. If I just didn't want to work, I would've just not showed up. But I wanted to put in my time, I was doing the best I could, and I was really in a lot of pain. All they would've had to do was ask nice, stupid AM, she saw me wrapping my purplygreenblue ankle in the break room.

Of course, I should've seen a doctor and got a note, but I hate doctors and I didn't think there was anything they could do for a sprain that I couldn't figure out myself.

Either way, I left with a very bad impression of that company and the way they treat employees.

Um, yeah, you should have had it looked at.

Sure, you may have just sprained it, but it's also possible to pop a tendon out of position, and that can cause long-term problems down the line if it's not caught.

I don't mess with anything that involves a lot of swelling.

yeah.. poping sounds are pretty indicative of something being damaged. See a doctor.

I had gotten my foot bitten by a dog halfway through my last week at Denny's. I had to go in and show them the bleeding wound before they believed me.
