  • You're 6'2" and weigh nearly 180lbs... use a heavier ball!

    So I get a call on the intercom today from my manager saying to shut off a lane... completely. No refund, no apology, just kill it.

    They had like 30 minutes left too. I was a little hesitant, but hell, I'm gonna do what I'm told.

    Come to find out, there was a guy on the lane, a BIG guy, that was using a 6lb ball.

    and he's is CHUCKING it, really hard. So my manager goes up and takes the ball away, because the 6lb balls are meant for the little kids. They don't have a weight in them, and they can be cracked REALLY easily.

    Of course, he throws a fit, and starts going off and demanding why he can't use it. So she informs him of why. Well the guy's father then comes up and starts spouting off.

    BG = Big Guy
    F = Father
    AGM = Assistant GM.

    ** This isn't exact quotes, my manager was pretty good at relating the story to me though **
    F: "I'm his physician and I say he HAS to use a 6lb ball".
    AGM: "He can use an 8lb ball, they have a weight in them, so he won't break it."
    F: "NO! He HAS to use this one!"
    AGM: "Sorry, but he can't. It's better this way, because it's gonna cost you a LOT more to replace this ball if you break it."
    BG: "But I'll hurt myself if I use a heavier ball!"
    AGM: "Look, you're a big guy, 2 pounds is not going to hurt you... I can't let you use this ball, you HAVE to get a heavier one."
    F: "I want to speak to you're manager!"
    AGM: "I'm currently the manager on duty, however, if you really want to talk to him, you can call him on Monday morning."
    ** The GM is currently out of town for a family reunion type thing. Also, today is Saturday.**
    F: "No! I want to speak to him now!"
    AGM: "That's not possible, you can call him on Monday morning."
    F: "Get him on the phone NOW!"
    AGM: "No." (Then she walked away and told me to kill the lane.)

    Seriously, this guy was only like 17, but he was HUGE. There is no way TWO extra pounds is gonna hurt him. Plus we only have so many 6lb balls, if one of them gets broken, that's one less kid that is gonna be able to bowl.

    You should restamp one of the 8 pounders with a 6 and say, here ya go.

        I know this is an SC we're talking about here, but... if he's unable to bowl with a normal ball, how is he able to shoot the smaller ball down the lane so hard without a problem? I call BS on that. If he were bowling normally with the smaller size, then I could believe there was a physical problem but he wasn't.

        Do you ever ban people from playing?

          Oh yeah, definitely.

          Especially if they're hitting the rake. If they hit it once, we just politely tell them to make sure they wait for it to come up... mistakes happen. I've hit it 2 or 3 times myself (not all at one time though)

          If they do it again, we cut em off, unless there is an actual mechanical problem.

          There was one guy that got banned from the alley because he BROKE the rake. He purposely threw a 16lb ball as hard as he could at it, and SNAPPED it in half. (These things are made out of a strong, but flexible, plastic). They gave him two choices:

          1. Leave and never come back.

          2. Pay for the rake. ($1500)

          He left.

            Um, far be it from me to tell someone they can't have a little fun, but if you are a grown person and you can't bowl with anything heavier than a 6-pounder, perhaps bowling at all is not a good idea...

            I have fairly small hands and I can't even get my fingers in those things...

              Bwah? I can't understand how in the world he could bowl at all if he could only use a 6 lb. Bowling puts a lot of stress on your arms, shoulders, etc.

              I mean, I use a 16-20 lb ball myself without complications and was doing so when I was that guy's size even.

                All that over 2 lbs? And the father was also his physician? I doubt that. I also doubt that a 2 lb difference was going to kill this "kid".

                  If his Dad is also his doctor then isn't that kinda sorta illegal? I thought that was against rules or something.

                    My dad's a doctor and he's not allowed to treat me so that emotions won't impair his judgement.

                        EXACTLY!! I think that would fall under "conflict of interest" or something. So, the asshat was probably lying.

                          remember, we are talking about SCs here... there is a huge difference between what they are allowed to do and what they actually do...

                          i'm still calling BS on the father though because if the difference between 6 and 8 pounds is going to cause serious damage I'd think that the kid shouldn't be bowling at all...

                            Wow, I never would have imagined. O-o

                            I highly agree with Bookstore. If you can't throw that much, why bother?

                              um I'm 32 and I use(my own) 6 lb ball(with hello kitty goodness)-due to a severe wrist injury(broken and needed pins that I couldn't afford and insurance wouldn't cover as my ex-husband broke my wrist in three places) I can't lift/support and properly throw anything heavier(which is why I bought my own ball)-what were you saying again? Guess I should quit bowling even though I used to be on a league with a 160 average with my 6 lb ball.
