  • be polite to potential tip thieves

this gem happened over a weekend shift; semi busy early afternoon time, people going in and out, kids everywhere, some with parents, but the ones in the title were not...

we generally do sampling during rushes for the usual reasons, get more sales; most take as freebies and are content with one or two.

not this trio (i think they were brothers or cousins); they came back multiple times, taking two or three per shot, irritating, but they are samples, so i don't say or do anything. they're also moving around the store, being pests with no intention of buying anything, which always makes me suspicious (we're a high theft area)

next thing i know, the middle aged member of the trio is messing with the cups; i again say nothing because i can get into trouble for 'telling them not to touch' things, even though they have no reason to. he moves from cups to some cookies (thankfully, these are prepackaged), then his paws move into the tips, sifting the coins and moving them around.

i immediately get pissed; wtf? how in the hell can you justify touching other people's money? i tell him, in a rather pissed tone, to get his hands out of there. he pulls his hands away, grinning; yah, nice kid.

a few seconds later, his brother/cousin comes up as one of my coworkers shows me a bracelet he found outside; nothing fancy or expensive, just a piece some teen girl probably dropped. we secure it in the drawer, when older brother says to me, 'oh, that's mine, ha ha.'

i look at him, already pissed at this group for being a pain in the ass, i look and him and say, 'right.' as sarcastically as possible.

he realises he's not made any friends and tries to play it off by telling me he's just playing. no, you want to play, there's a park down the street; this is a business, not a playground/enterainment center.

they finally leave, but i get a verbal reprimand for speaking too harshly to a potential tip thief, because it's 'not a welcoming' manner of communication.

a few hours after this, the youngest comes in, grabs a cup and runs out...right. i must try harder to be more 'welcoming' to these potential pillars of society.

corporate policy is our biggest stumbling stone i think, sometimes; we have to welcome potential thieves, scammers and liars, yet our store is having issues.
    look! it's ghengis khan!

Ugh.. yes I rememebr those. Or worse yet, those who grab some money from the tip jar to help pay their totals. If looks could kill, those people would be toast. and of course, we dare not tell them that money is TIPS, not money you can grab if you're short on your total.

we had that happen a couple of times, too; i told them rather plainly, 'that's NOT a take a penny' jar, it's our TIPS. they had enough shame to be embarrassed, but crap, dude, when was the last time you saw dollars in a take a penny jar?

idiots and thieves; we're surrounded and can't get away, because corporate won't let us: "they're 'potential customers,' so be nice to them." right, because every customer has an urge for that five finger discount.

Please tell the person that reprimanded you that I now know he/she is an idiot.

If these jerks had pulled a gun and robbed the place, would the idiot have reprimanded you for not handing over the cash drawer fast enough and speaking harshly to them?

WTF?!?!!?? Be nice to someone that is stealing part of your income? This one would've made me lose my cool with my superiors.

A LONG time ago, I was 17 and waiting tables at a greasy spoon truck stop restaurant. I was full of piss and vinegar at that age and had no fear of poppin off at the mouth when people pissed me off....

At this particular restaurant, we had to deal with a tip stealing mother-in-law. We (me and other servers) were required to tip her out, however, on more than one occasion, we saw her pocketing tips from the table. On another occasion, we saw a mother and little boy sitting in the restaurant eating. We watched as the mother instructed her son to go and take tip money off the counter. When I raised holy hell with the owner, I was told that even if I could prove it - it was OUR fault for not taking our tips off the table quicker.

          I didn't work there long.

Oh no.. most of them knew it was our tip jar. They just decied to help themselves to it regardless. And forget pennies, they'd grab damn near $1 of change sometimes.

yah, the sad fact is that they do know what it is, but they won't stop until you 'remind' them...tells you a great deal about people these days.

it annoys me to no end; our manager's a great guy who's trying to walk the line between keeping a good store with happy customers, follow corporate policies (which in some cases are pure steaming bs) and keep a happy staff.

it's putting the poor guy through hell...something i hate to see.

the worst part is that we're in an area where the locals aren't, for the most part, good solid citizens with ethics or morals, just a 'gimme, gimme, gimme' attitude.

it makes work really...interesting at times.

I realize this costs a little money ... but, what about getting one of those little locked clear plastic boxes with a slot on top that charities use? People can put in, but can't take out.

I know it's probably tough, but I suggest looking for a different job with less BS. Good luck.

For all our complaining, S-bucks isn't really a bad job.. I only left because I moved on to a different full-time career field. I didn't mind working there at all. It only sucked that it was job #2 for me, and it became hours 41-65 of my work week.

if we got the ones with the slot, they'd steal the jar; we haven't found a way to fool proof this yet, from velcro bottoms to no bottoms (this has worked the best, since they can't do a 'grab and run' anymore), they still keep at it.

maybe a big glass jar or a wooden spoon to smack wandering hands with...ahh, now that's something i'd like.

i may consider a new job if we don't leave the area; right now, we're not sure if we're staying or moving within the next year, so i'm in a 'wait and see' position. i don't want to job hop right now; it'll add more stress than i really need, ironically.

Thank God I don't work at S-bucks! My coffee chain is VERY protective of its employees--the employee handbook specifically says customers are NOT allowed to use the tip jar to offset their shortage for a purchase. Also, my manager does NOT tolerate people who steal tips--there was one guy that was notorious for trying, so my manager had a little "chat" with him. He doesn't come in anymore, and that's just fine with all the higher ups.

Just a tip for your tip jar issues, chained...when it starts to get busy after school with all the sticky-fingered teens, I switch out the tip jar for a fresh, empty one. Especially if there's a bunch of dollar bills in it!!!

i'm usually very proactive about dropping tips, but we were hit by a rush before i could finish dropping them (i'd pulled the bills already and was in the process of getting the change when this happened), but i had to work the register and wait to finish out the tip drop.

we have cues for thieves, usually it's getting water for them, but this move was pretty damned bold (stupid) and caught me off guard for about 0.02 seconds.

i guess it's my upbringing that makes me intolerant of this kind of bs; i was taught that stealing is wrong (did it once when i was four; never did it again), but apparently, this little gem was left out of this kid's upbringing.
