  • Quarter Customer

Yesterday, a customer wanted 2 rolls of quarters. Since we can't give rolls of quarters out anymore, I told the customer that we couldn't spare any rolls. The customer wasn't happy and mentioned that he needed them to do his laundry. I got the money from him so I could see if I could get him the quarters.

My service desk coworker wanted to know what was going on when I got into the cash room and I told her. She mentioned that we weren't allowed to sell rolls of quarter and I told her that I told the customer that.

I relayed the news to the customer. He wanted the person who said that we couldn't sell quarters to him so I got my service desk coworker and she took over.

The customer mentioned that he shopped in the store all the time and my service desk coworker told him that his not getting the rolls of quarters had nothing to do with that. She explained that we didn't have enough quarters to spare since we don't get as much change as we used to. I was working in the cash room while she was talking to the customer. She allowed him to have a few dollars in quarters and eventually the customer left.

Maybe it's just me, but that's one thing i don't understand. If you're out at a store, you're already away from home, you could drive your butt to a bank to get the quarters!

I dunno, I think I expect too much from people

I don't get many rolls of quarters either where I work. (We start with 4 rolls, that have $10 each in quarters).

However, I am usually able to give out ONE roll if someone asks... I usually end up having 1 or 2 left at the end of the day anyway.

Last time I did it was for a little girl who wanted to play the claw machine and win some prizes for a bunch of her friends. It was cute.

My boss FORBIDS us to sell any change at all.
Why? The banks in this town now CHARGE you for "buying" rolls of change.

I tell the customers this and they call me a liar.

Not when banks are usually open only 6 hours of the day. We don't know when this occurred.

Couldn't he just pick a snack, or some other really cheap item he might need or want, and pay with a bill, and ask nicely for change to come in quarters ?

I don't know if this would have changed anything for him, depending on store policy, but usually, around here, this works. Of course, the most important part is to ask nicely.

Being nice does so much wonders one can only wonder why not everyone is nice.

Well, you can't always go to the bank for change, due to the bank being closed. We save our change during the week, and that often gives us enough quarters to do our laundry on the weekends. However, this weekend we had quite a bit more than usual due to some new clothes and changing the bedding from winter to summer blankets. And we did laundry on Sunday, so I couldn't go to the bank to get quarters.

The laundromat's change machines were both empty, too. So, I had to head over to the grocery store in the plaza. The girl at the service desk told me she couldn't sell me quarters because she was out of them - despite the two rolls I could clearly see in her drawer. I don't like when people lie to my face. I've had problems with this same girl at the desk before. Even when trying to break a 20 into a 10 and two 5's. I wonder if she thinks I'm some kind of scammer or something? Although exchanging a 10 for a roll of quarters isn't the world's brightest scam...

I wound up getting quarters from one of the supervisors, C, who I worked with for a total of 7 years, between the grocery store and another company. C asked me why I didn't get any quarters at the service desk. I told her the girl at the desk was out of quarters and left as C headed to the service desk with some extra rolls of quarters. Wish I could have stuck around for that conversation.

I think she's more confused about why you expect your grocery store to act as your personal bank.
Just because a customer expects you to put some effort into your job, that does not make them an SC.

That's a bit harsh, especially since he explained the situation rather well.

Yeah sure, sometimes places can't, or won't do something, but it never hurts to ASK. Sometimes, asking nicely is all it takes.

It'd be harsh if the behavior wasn't totally out of line. Asking and demanding are two entirely different things. Re-read the post. It's dripping with entitlement. How does the poster know how many quarters the service desk uses a day? Or how many requests for rolls of quarters does the service desk get a day? The poster is presuming to know this information.

There are threads from customer service folks posted on this site everyday, complaining about this type of behavior from customers or actually non-customers. And everyday people rail in support of the customer service persons indignation. But, when a poster posts about their acting in the same manner, people are supposed to look away because this person works in customer service?

Sorry. If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, it's usually a duck.

Yes but the girl said she didn't HAVE any, not that she couldn't GIVE him any.

BIG difference... by saying she didn't HAVE any, she lied to him, he has a right to be miffed.

Now if she had just said "I'm sorry, but I can't give them out, we go through a lot of quarters." I'm sure there wouldn't have been a problem.

Maybe she meant she was "out of quarters to give away". At any rate, I've often found that a little white lie to customers can get them out of your face a lot more quickly and easily. If the majority of the time you tell them policy and they want to argue with you about it, simply telling them you're out can cut out that same old argument.

At times yes, but I always take the honesty approach. If I can't do something, I can't do it, and that's exactly what I tell them. If they want to argue, my manager is standing right there... and they'll just tell you the same thing.

                            Well, unless it's the night-time manager working, and you're a cute girl... he's such a horn-dog. It's great!

That's a double edged sword. If they find out that you are lying, that might set them off far more. I don't know about anyone else, but nothing else pisses me off more than lying to my face.

I have occasionally asked for changed, but only when I am a customer and not for anything outrageous. I have yet to be told no.
