  • Line Customer

Yesterday, a customer came up to the service desk. It turned out that he wasn't happy that a customer behind him in line went up to the service desk and got served. He wondered if that was the policy and I got a manager who could better explain the situation. By the way, if a customer comes up to the service desk with a few items, they're allowed to be rung up at the desk.

I don't see the suck in this on anyones part. I'd complain too if a person who was behind me ended up getting checked out quicker because of some mostly unknown policy.

I think she's saying it was beyond her control, because the store policy says they have to wait on customers who come to the desk.
The customer who complained wasn't necessarily sucky, except that he was ticked at the wrong person.

If I had been the cashier, I would have said, "I will be right with you, but this customer was actually ahead of you," and I would call that customer over.

I've done that in the past.

People didn't complain because they were usually too embarrassed at having their cutting into the line exposed.
Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.

The customer that came up to the service desk was originally in line at one of the registers and that's what the other customer wasn't happy about. By the way, when I'm buying my food and beverage for later and don't have time to wait in line at the register, I go to the service desk to get checked out.

like you have control over that other persons behavior. You were doing your job. At my register we get people from all over checking out with out photo related items, mostly fellow coworkers going on breaks or lunch, they wait in the line like everyone else and tend to be politer then other customers. Well if anyone behind them has film they explode in anger about "favoritism". It isn't favoritism it is customer service. people who work there are customers too!

I hope the manager explained that you were just doing the right thing.

He's just ticked off because he didn't think of it first.

I just don't get it. If there is a long line at a till and another one opens, obviously the people at the END ot the first line will go to the other till, and the first ones to do so will be rung up befor the ones who stayed at the end of the first line. Sure, it might be a little annoying, especially if some other customers before you in the line are being difficult, but it is in no way the fault of the cashier !

Half the time I think it's easier to just stay where I am and let everyone else fight to get there first. If I'm not in a hurry I don't worry about it.

Ditto. Most of the time, I'll let everybody rush to the newly opened till and assess if the line at that till is shorter than the line I'm in, also factoring in the approximate number of items in each line. 8 people with a dozen items each might be faster than 3 people with a fully loaded shopping cart. Somehow, some people seem not to get that.
