  • quickie: The Black Spot Might Poison Me!

Backgound: Our lobby and the area where we serve our breakfast share the same space. As a result, people tend to “demand” breakfast items all hours of the day. We leave the left over bananas & apples from the day out. The lobby is larger then some, but not as large as a 4 or 5 star hotel by any means. Often on the weekends guests will sit for hours playing cards. Tonight 5 ladies were sitting in the lobby playing cribbage.

    SC: not a team player
OG: other guest, person she was speaking to
Me: there to be looked at like I am scum

SC: (to other guest) Hey, you want a banana?
    OG: No, I am good.
    SC: How about an apple?
    OG: No.
SC: Well, I am gonna eat a banana. (next part said loudly) This one has a black spot, but I guess I will eat it anyway! (I was standing less then 10 feet away from her at the time, doing some breakfast prep)
    Me: Is it okay?
SC: Well, it had a black spot but whatever. I wasn’t talking to YOU anyway.
Me: (thinking, “then why the hell did you say it so loud?”) I know. I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t bad. I am here for quality control. *I look at banana* Oh yeah that one will be fine. (It was just a scar on the outside, not visible blackness/mooshy banana spoil)
SC: *scoffs a little bit & walks back to her chair* I am gonna sit here & eat my banana with the black spot.

Ya know, when I read the title, I was thinking maybe the SC suffers from a condition like OCD that causes them to have an irrational fear of being poisoned. But then I read the story... I'm pretty sure most people with an irrational fear of being poisoned would just throw it away, they'd be too ashamed to announce their condition.
Your SC was just a middle-school brat in an older persons body.

I never understood why people have to have their food in perfect condition; even as a little kid, I would happily take the broken cookie. All the other kids would complain if they got stuck with it.

They probably didn't want to get short changed. I know if I get something free, I want all that I'm entitled to...</sarcasm>

sadly you weren't the only one who thought of that (especially sense USA had Dead Man's Chest playing earlier).

Psssh Muppet Treasure Island FTW. As much as Captain Jack rocks...ya gotta love the Muppets. I still to this day crack up thinking about Blind Pew handing over the Black Spot and just plowing anything and everything down in his path.

I hate the breakfast askers too. I mean, its not my food and I really don't care but i'm not going to interrupt my routine of internet browsing and ninjanapping to actively get food for someone.

We have a small church that meets in our conference room and they're nice older people for the most part but they consider our lobby a free for all. Every day they meet they pick the lobby clean of fruit, coffee, cookies... ive even seen them load up a bowl of dry cereal and carry it out. And undoubtedly one of them will ask me to unlock the juice machine for them or ask me to go see if there are any bagels in the locked kitchen.

But for this lady to bitch about free food and then go psycho when you offer help is inexcusable. I hope she choked on that black spot.

Yup they aren't ripe if they don't have freckles.

I was thinking more along the lines of Treasure Island instead of POTC, but still, the pirate idea came to me too. =P

My mom likes to keep the bananas around til they're really brown. It grosses me out. But a spot or two on a banana is perfectly normal/delicious. Makes me wonder if that SC wanted them green.

actually a banana isn't ripe until it starts spotting-kinda like the difference between some apples being green when un ripe and red when ripe-bananas are grren or yellow when unripe-and yellow with brown spots when actually ripe.

                      from this site

                      * Green -- unripened bananas, used in soups and stews.
                      * Yellow with green tips -- partially ripe, used for broiling, baking or frying.
                      * All Yellow -- ripe, eaten raw or in waffles, puddings, cakes or pies.
                      * Yellow with brown freckles -- full-ripe, raw or in salad, fruit cup or other dishes calling for uncooked fruit.
                      * All Brown -- over ripe, if flesh is firm, still in prime eating condition.
                      * Blackened areas -- bruised fruit and should be avoided.
                      * Raw, unripened fruit can be irritating to your digestive system. Imperfectly ripened bananas are composed of starch; but as the natural ripening proceeds, the saccharine material is converted into dextrine and glucose. Cook the starchy, unripened fruit as you would use a potato, or let them ripen at room temperature to sweeten. When they are the color you need, bananas can be stored in the refrigerator. The skins may turn dark, but the pulp will stay at the desired ripeness
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

I encounter her type daily. People like her go through life complaining about everything and acting as if nothing is ever quite to their liking. I actually feel sorry for them as they NEVER are happy. Complaining or griping somehow gives them the only pleasure in their lives. As they age, the cat butt face becomes permanent.

Smiling and being cheerful to that type actually brings out the worst in them. And you know good and well that if you had not spoken up about the banana, she would have said something about you ignoring her or how poor service in general has become.
