  • Nothing like a little anti-Semitism at work.....

So I'm working at The Bar the other day. And two women come in and want to buy a particular t-shirt, which is displayed on the wall. And on this display, this particular t-shirt is listed as being $25 plus tax. With me so far? Okay. Enough set-up. Let me just give you the dialogue now, as it pretty much explains it all.

WOMAN: "So, can you give me a deal on it?"
JESTER: "Sure! (points to display sign with price) Twenty five dollars plus tax!"
WOMAN: "So we can't Jew you?"
    JESTER: "Excuse me?"
WOMAN: "We can't Jew you down?"
    JESTER: "Um, no."

And the sale proceeded, with me fuming internally.

Now, some of you may wonder why I did not confront her on this. I wanted to, I really did. But I truly love The Bar and the people who own/run it, and I did not want to do anything that might make them look bad. That being said, I did talk to Boss Man later that afternoon, as I was truly fuming.

He thought I handled it well, and was the "bigger man." I agree. However, he also said that if something like that happened in the future, I would be well within my rights, and not doing anything bad to the business, if I told the customer, "I'm going to have to get someone else to serve you, as I cannot do so any more."

What I WANTED to say was, "Well, no. But you can get the asshole racist discount, where we double the price for people like you. And by the way, my name is Simon Rosenthal. Nice to meet you."

    Fucking idiots.

For those who don't live in the U.S., there are people who use phrases like "they jewed us," "jew them down," etc. The first means they cheated you...the second one means you talked someone down in price. The connotation of both and other similar phrases are quite clear, i.e., that Jews are cheap people, and so if you cheat someone or talk them down to a better price, you are acting like a Jew.

I do not follow the Jewish religion, but I am from a Jewish family, and I find such comments highly offensive. But it is not just because of my heritage that I find this offensive. If someone used a phrase denigrating to another group, I would have been just as offended.

I know what you are thinking. "Jester, you SO should have told that woman off." Easy to say. Tempting to do. But once I calmed down, I realized my boss was someone right, that I was the better person. But no, I don't think I will keep so silent the next time something like that happens. Silence, after all, condones to an extent what the person is saying. But I will say something politely and calmly, NOT what I was thinking at the time of this incident. Because THAT would have been neither professional NOR on a higher moral ground than what the woman said to me.

Shit still pisses me off, though. Fucking idiot. I hate stupid people.

Wow, that's just all kinda wrong. Good on you for holding your tongue/temper. My brain/mouth filter doesn't work quite that well.

Whoa, that's actually a new one on me - I haven't heard that phrase before, even though I'm in the U.S.

What a horrible thing to say.

I gotta give you much for keeping your cool with those "ladies" and that nasty comment they made. That would've taken every ounce of strength in me to keep me from going off on them. Fucking ignoramuses.

Ahhh, that brings back fond memories of being the only jewish kid in my class growing up in New Jersey. I killed Christ, ya know.

I hate to say it, Jester, but that kind of mentality stems from hundreds of years of prejudice and backward thinking.

Even Shakespeare made negative comments about the Jewish in Merchant of Venice (among other works). That's just how the thinking was back then.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning what she said at all. I would have turned that back on her in a heartbeat. Just pointint out that it's in no way limited to the States.

Jeez, I'm surpised she then didn't turn around and accuse you of trying to "gyp" her.

But I bet she would have.

I wonder if she even knew what she said? I have cousins, sadly, who throw around words they oughtn't who I think often don't even realize how ignorant and nasty it makes them look.

I dunno, Jester, er...Mr. Rosenthal , sometimes people say stuff that catches you so flat-footed you don't even know how to react until later. Your brain just goies into this loop of "What? WHAT??"

I'd lean more towards thousands of years, considering the date Sheldonrs mentioned and other historical events even before that. It sucks.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that, Jester. I haven't heard that term in a good long time and when I did, I think I blew a blood vessel. If it had been at work, I would've had to walk away. I'd hoped that that term had died out but I see it hasn't.

Was it someone of an older generation? It wouldn't excuse them but if it isn't, it's more than disheartening that it's making the rounds again with younger people.

Like 'gyp', that's a term I've seen a lot of people throw around without really considering its connotation.

My best friend's mother was telling me that she once gave a speech in front of a group of people and used the term 'gypped.' Someone explained to her afterwards that it was a derogatory word for the Roma. She was mortified- she had no idea.

The hilarious part? It was at a diversity seminar.

I had a nasty habit of stealing it cause it was pretty. Then people just started givng me their change.
I actually collected over 56 dollars in quarters, nickles, dimes and pennys in the span of one month when i was 8.
My father stopped when i was 12 and i point out how raciest it made him sound.

Doesn't "gyped" from from a shortening of gypsies who DID rip people off?

And to use "Jew" as a verb, tasteless.

Big credits for being the bigger person.

I probably would have gone with, “Oy with the Jewing I don’t thing I can you know with the taxes and the depreciation and the oil cost oh the oil………………….”

                            I can keep going.

And I wonder why my venders hate me.

That's kind of funny, considering how many Jews are in New Jersey! And yes, I know, that doesn't mean every town has a lot of Jews....just saying.

I love when people say this. Because, frankly, it's ignoring their own teachings. Not to get too Bible on y'all, but the fact is that the Jews only chose which one, Jesus or the other one (Barbarus?) went free. The ROMANS killed Jesus. Yet you never see people saying about the Italians, the ancestral descendants of the Romans, "they killed Christ." Ironically Italians are often some of the most devout Christians. Amazing how people can ignore basic facts. Then again, we are talking about the ignorant here.

Just a note here....that is not actually my name. My actual name is not "blatantly Jewish," as is, say, one of my cousin's. I have used my cousin's name in previous situations where I wanted to make the fact that I was Jewish obvious to even the stupidest person.

Example: a while back when I was filling in at my friend's magic bar, this guy starting going off on Jews, saying some pretty obnoxious things. When he finally came to a pause, without missing a beat I said, "Hi. My name's [my cousin's obviously Jewish name]. How ya doin'?" Dude turned WHITE. It was awesome!

Oh, no doubt. There has been prejudice for a long time, not merely against Jews but against all kinds of groups. This is now new, nor did I think it was. Just fucking annoying.

Um, she was about late forties early fifties. Don't know that I would call it that much of an older generation, considering she was too young to have been a hippy!
