  • abuse over $1

Background: This happened awhile ago when I had a job at a $1 & $2 store. It was privately owned by a small company in Montana. There were signs up on every isle that said that anything broken by anyone for any reason must be paid for. It was only a $1 or $2 store, so you would think something that cost a buck wouldn't be that big of a deal.

I was prolly 19 when I worked there. I was very soft, and didn't deal with angry/screaming people all that well. I was the backroom manager, doing my thing. I was checking product out on the floor when I hear a crash. I go and grab the broom and dustpan right away. These two ladies had been shopping together. They were nice enough appologizing for breaking something.

Since I was the one who saw the ladies, I had to be sure to be at the registers to point them out to a cashier. I was lucky that the manager/owner was there. Everything was going fine, until the ladies went to seperate registers (we only had two). So, in my quiet & timid voice I say, "I am not sure which lady broke the (don't remember what it was)...". Next thing I know the ladies are freaking the f*** out & swearing up a storm. I am in shock. I told them I was sorry, I didn't make the rule. They have to be explained the store policy (because SC's don't read as we all know). One of the ladies says, "Fine, whatever I will pay for it." In the mean time, they are glaring at me like I am the most evil person alive. They say they will never be back again. The Manager says, "Good. We don't want you back here if you are going to treat my employees like that."

I appreciate the manager being like that, most of the time she was very pro-customer. But this was over a whole buck, so I would have done the same thing.

So, I take off to the back of the store where there is nobody & proceed to bawl my eyes out. I was soft, what can I say? Another employee was sent after me because apparently I didn't look like I was doing well when the ladies were still there. She comes & finds me and takes me to the manager's office where the manager procedes to tell me that I did everything right.

Heehee! Your title makes me think of Monty Python's "I'd like to buy an argument" sketch. "I'm sorry, but we only sell abuse for over a dollar here, abuse for under a dollar is down the street, two blocks."
It's always amazing to me what a fuss people will throw over tiny amounts of money. We are a society of cash-addicts, I swear.

This is why I love working for a small, independently owned store. The owner is usually there, knows exactly what we go through, and lets the SCs know what we all really think of them.
