  • "Which one?"

I just heard a story from my family member in customer service...
They were filling a customer's order, and making them an account at the store, and she asked them for their phone number..
    They said:

    Which one?

    ....
    Maybe.. THE ONE THAT WORKS!

I'm pretty used to that nowadays, since there's a lot of people out there with cell-phones and house phones. One time I was using a phone number to look up a members account and after 4 different numbers, we finally got it.

Yeah I get that response, so I clarify in our case, "We would only call you if you left something behind and need to call you back."

Considering that the average family has at least four numbers...it's not that odd.

There is the house phone number, the work phone number, the cell phone number, and the spouses phone number...

I've gotten used to it and I'll just reply "The one that you'll most be likely at when I call during normal business hours.

I'll either get the work number or the cell.

The one that works, or the one where we can actually relay info to you.

I called the number on a work order, and it was indeed a working number. The problem was, it was an office number for a doctor who had recently retired. The answering machine gave me all the info I needed to get copies of my records and transfer them to another physician.

Unfortunately, I was trying to hem Dr. Know-It-All's trousers. The instructions weren't clear, and his home number was unlisted. He called the store several times, complaining about the service, and I left several messages on his office phone which he never checked.
