  • I wat to know what you all think - a hotel question

    OK,

You are staying at a hotel.

The fire alarm goes off in the middle of the night. There was not an actual fire, but the building needs to be evacuated, etc.

Do you think you deserve a discount?

    Just looking for some opinions.

No, I think that would be unreasonable. That would mean you would have to give a discount to every room that night.

May I mutter about idiots who call in fake bomb threats while I am forced to wait?

No. It's hardly the hotel's fault that something like this happened. If the staff handles it all nice and professionally, I may even give you props.

No. That's like saying that every time the fire alarm went off when I was in school I should have gotten an "A" in the class.

It's part of the understanding when you stay at any place that has fire alarms.

And I'd rather know that the alarms work.

The only exception to this would be if the hotel knew the alarms are faulty and didn't warn the guests before check-in.

A friend of mine had a fire alarm (one that's inside the room only, not linked to the entire hotel) going off throughout the night. They couldn't determine the reason, so they finally moved her to another room. This was after it had gone off three or four times already. Her new room caught fire (the AC unit apparently overheated, through no fault of hers). She was thoroughly disgusted by that point, demanded a refund, and went to stay at another hotel. Depends on the situation I guess.

No, things happen sometimes to inconvenience me and it's no one's fault. I'm not one of those people who always wants someone to blame.

A discount for something that is obviously beyond the control of the hotel is out of the question.

And if I were the owner of said hotel, I'd put a security camera on every fire alarm. At least my guests would have the satisfaction of beating the prankster with complimentery hotel baseball bats.

No. That's something out of the hotel's control and they shouldn't have to comp every room just because some prankster decided to have a little fun.

I think it depends on why the alarm went off. If it were some jackass pulling the alarm then no. If the hotel knew there was a problem or somehow caused the alarm to go off then I'd want a partial refund.

Yeah alarms can go off for a number of reasons. heh

My sister and her 7 yr old son went to visit my parents at their hotel. My nephew saw the fire alarm thingy on the wall and asks "whats this for" as he pulls down the lever. Alarm goes off, all the guests have to exit building. My mom found a worker and explained it was her grandson and it was an accident but the fire dept had to come to check anyways.

I wouldn't bother asking for a discount. These things are bound to happen.

Honestly, it depends on the customer. If they came to the front desk an caused a big stink about how they were woken up in the middle of the night and how big of an issue it was because they didn't get their beauty sleep, etc, I'd discount the room maybe even comp it. But I wouldn't comp each and every room for that night, because 99% of the people would understand.

I know, I know, I'm just enabling the EW, but that's the reality of the hotel business in a situation like that.
