I recently quit working at a gas station and this is the story of what happened my next to last night. I always worked the closing shift generally from 4pm-12am.

We have a maintenance guy who only comes in on the weekdays to do miscellaneous stuff like take out the trash outside. On the weekends its the midshift persons responsibility to do this, but as we were short staffed it hadn't been done this particular day and the trashcans were close to overflowing.

Well this happened at about 11:00pm in a college town on the weekend; in other words a good time not to act like a jackass or the police will give you a good talking to.

A group of yokels from the local highschool pull up in a pickup truck with 6 or so of them riding in the bed of the truck. They decide that now is the perfect time to empty the assload of trash that they have accumulated in said truck. As the cans on this side of the store were full they decided to just throw the trash all over the ground outside

Something these kids didn't know is that our store is the only one in town that lets people use their credit cards to get gas 24 hours so the cops use only our gas station. A cop who was inside saw what was happening and said that they weren't technically doing anything illegal, just being asshats. However, you cannot let people ride in the back of a truck as it has no seatbelts. So the officer gets into his car and pulls up behind the truck as its leaving. As soon as their truck hits the road the officer turns on his lights and pulls them over. Turns out the kid driving didn't have a license and the car was impounded and the kids had to call Mommy and Daddy to come pick them up teehee.

Glad to see they didn't get away with everything.

I find it comical the asshats failed to notice the cop car nearby.

Great story but I'm mystified as to how it wouldn't be illegal to take trash and throw it around outside a store's garbage cans.

        Isn't that littering?

Here in Ohio, they would have gotten a ticket for that..but it sounds to me like the cop pwned them even better.

That's what I was wondering too? In Florida you could get fined for that and if it's a hefty amount of litter on the highway, you can bet your ass you'll get a ride downtown.

At least the cop handed their asses to them...

If I'm not mistaken, the key element there is private property. If the kids in the
story had pulled that stunt with a trash can on a public sidewalk, in view of the
cops, it would have been a ticket. I suspect that's the same reason the cop
waited until the truck touched a public road before hitting his lights. Believe it or
not, a lot of traffic laws don't apply if a vehicle is operated on private property.
You can actually drive a motor vehicle, underage and unlicensed, without plates or
insurance, so long as the vehicle in question remains on private land. Race tracks
are a good example, as well as large farms.

Once the vehicle touches a public road, though.....

Actually, I am sure that littering on private property is illegal, too. At least here it is. The law is worded in such a way that you have to be responsible for your trash. It it gets dragged from your trash can into someone else's yard by animals, if it blows out of your vehicle, whatever. If it's your trash you are responsible for it.

Although for whatever reason, cops seem to be loathe to enforce that law, for some reason.

Long story short, had trouble with a neighbor's trash routinely ending up in my yard. (Some of your remember my Shitbird Next Door stories). Looked up the ordinance on line, yep, it's illegal as hell. However, I had to show the printed out law to the damn cop when he showed up to file the report. I guess he was afraid the snacks were getting cold over at the Krispy Kreme and was in a hurry.

He took the report, and even paid the Shitbird Next Door a visit, but I had to force him.

probably a private property thing, but kudos for nailing them to the cop.

tonight I had one of my drivers get in an accident, but since there were no injusies and it was in a parking lot they weren't going to send an officer. probably just depends on where you are.
