  • That Narrows It Down...

"I was just speaking to someone, can you get me back to her?"
"Uhh.. do you have any identifying details?" (we can't do transfers anyways, but wasting a minute of the cust's time by pretending to try makes them less upset than just saying no, and this question usually gets a "Uh, no, maybe you can help me?")
    "Well, they were female."
    "...."
"They didn't tell you anything about my problem?"

No, amazingly enough we don't all conference after every call to share the fascinating details of walking you through power cycling your modem. Jesus.

      *Flees in the other direction!*

But yeah, thats like saying "hey, you live in Canada, do you know Mike? From Canmore?"
Well, actually I do, it was a skit, but you get the idea.

Anriana... that sounds like what I used to get all the time working at the call center... so either you work for the same company I used to or the idiots are out in even stronger force than I feared.

Oh yeah, people always want to speak to John. I usually laugh at them.

That can get confusing at my store . . . if Mohair's around, then we'd have to ask which one (our store manager also has the same first name.)

Even worse, is if it's someone asking for "Steve." We have 4 employees with that name . . . so we can't automatically guess which one the caller wants unless they give us a last name or whomever answers the phone asks for a last name.

That sounds familiar! Wasn't that from the Royal Canadian Air Farce? Good stuff...
It's been a long, long, long, long time...

This story reminds me of a semi-joke we have running at the goth/metal bar I frequent :
                            "Have you seen Tony ?"
                            - Er... Sorry, I don't think I know him. What does he look like ?
                            - Tall guy. Long dark hair. He's got some piercing and tattoos and usually wears a black leather coat."

I think that describes more than half of the regulars of place. Really happened once or twice, though.
"I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question."

I get that a lot... even worse is if I happen to get back a customer I've spoken to before. They hear my name and realise they've got the same operator, and just launch into the conversation again as if we've just finished speaking.

I then have to direct the conversation without them realising I don't know who they are or what they said to me on the previous call. It's just not interesting, it leaves my brain the second they hang up.
