  • They're back...

...and cracking us up with their lame and futile attempts to return again.

tells the original story of how this couple worked. Bought and returned like crazy, eventually got banned from returning at all. The wife, embarrassed, stopped shopping, while the husband kept shopping every once in a while, but had to get every purchase approved by a sup because his card had a block to prevent returns.

Well, today, they tried it again, badly. Very badly.

We have had a lot of new people switch into the department, so most of these new people do not know what this couple looks like. However, a few of us originals are still present down there, who know exactly who they are.

A man came in today with a $1200 generator, wanting to return it. He handed the cashier his membership card...

    which read "Mr. H."

The cashier recognized the name, not the face, and asked a coworker if that was the right person... it wasn't... they pulled up the card, saw the blocks on the account, the notes about how they are not allowed to return at all, etc.

Mr. H tried to get his friend to return for him.

The MOD ended up coming down and telling him we could not process the return. The man kept saying "I know SM! He already said it was okay because it was a gift from Mr. H!" Since SM is the one who originally placed the notes and the block, we knew this was an outright LIE. The MOD did take the man's name, his own membership number, and phone number so the SM could call him later regarding the return.

MOD gets back to the office and hands off the paper to my manager, who reads over the paper with another coworker sitting in the office at the time, when the coworker recognizes the name, and pulls up the account.

The account has just as bad of a return history as Mr. and Mrs. H, and was currently under investigation! This led us to believe that the two are WORKING TOGETHER *cue dramatic music!* My manager laughed and laughed. She said, "Well, if they didn't want attention brought to their return history, they sure went a bad way around that one!" We expect this other account to have a swift block on returns brought upon it soon due to their history, as well as the fact they tried to pull a fast one over on us... we'll see what SM says tomorrow about this incident...

Now let me get this straight, Mr. & Mrs. H returned over ten thousand dollars of merchandise over the span of a couple years. Meaning this has been going on for a looooong time. All this before finally being blocked from returning anything. This "friend' of Mr. H is being investigated, which means he also has a horrific return history. Seems like a pretty high cost of business to investigate for so long that the store is out thousands of dollars. Just sayin',

That's why no one should EVER be allowed to return ANYTHING.

However, that's not possible and really screws over the majority who are actually, honestly returning something.

Unfortunately in the "H" case, stuff like this has to go on for a long time in order to be caught. I am assuming this store is some kind of club store which can monitor purchases and returns a lot better than say Wal Mart who probably has scammers like this but because there are so many Wally Worlds, people could get away with it forever.

I hate returning things. Mostly just for the "I brought the wrong thing. I'm a dumbass." feel. But if I do, I tend to just return what I need to return, and hope that it works.

Off topic: I love the acronym MOD. Because it spells Mod. And what do they do?

Seems to me, if the store took this long in banning someone from doing this, they kinda deserved it. How can you not tell when soemone is doing this, especially when you have a computerized accounting system to track it??

Makes me wonder why there isn't a "maximum" amount that can be returned in a given time (6 months? a year?) and after that maximum is reached an account is flagged. Heck I get worried about returning some things to WalMart for legitimate reasons because I've returned other things in the past. Mostly stuff for my niece and nephew that end up being too small (they grow too dang fast for Auntie to keep up!) I've returned, probably a max of maybe $100 total in the last 5 years, but I still worry that its "too much." I guess I should stop worrying?
