There's this crazy dude (cd) who will get our flyers and write on the back of them. He will then latter on the day ask for tape so he can tape parts of the newspaper on the sheets he scribbled on. Last time he asked for tape I told him to buy his own, they sell them at the drugstore down the street. One time he grabbed a hold of about 10 flyers, but these flyers had info. on all the branches. People are always asking for these flyers so I stopped the guy.

Me: You can't take that many. You can take one?
cd: you won't let me take them? How many can I take.
Me: one. Also, buy your own paper.

He puts them back on the desk one at a time.

today I was going to the elevator to go down, and he's waiting for it. The doors open to go up and he turns to me and says;
cd: you must be a book worm.
me: the elevator is going up.
he gets on the elevator.

So far he is't asking me for help. But he's sitting at a taple, and there are tons of loose notebook paper that he has written on, and some color pencil artwork on notebook paper. He has all these books open from the reference collection. Every once in a while he goes to the shelves looking for books or else goes to the catalog to type in goodness knows what in the catalog. I don't think he knows what he is doing, just writing stuff down without any rhyme or reason.

I've been on the Reference desk for 2 hours, right after lunch. So not fun.

We had a similar situation at our library. There was this one guy, hasn't come back since but anyway it was blatantly obvious he was mentally handicap but he started going around and grabbing copy's of every single free flyer, pamphlet, apartment rental guides, housing guides any other loose paper he could find he had a huge armful. The problem started when he grabbed some random books and tried to leave. Now we are trying to stop him to talk to him and all he is saying is Nuhhhh!, ahhhhh mmmmmahhhhh we are able to grab the books and the guy heads back into the library and staff try to give him a bag for his flyers and when he trys to put them into the bag he drops them all over the place and when staff trys to help him he freaks and starts doing the Nuhhhh!, ahhhhh mmmmmahhhhh!!!! thing again but then he leaves them and then begins to start over and goes around collecting more flyers and then wanders up to the 4th floor and when he comes down he has again a huge armfull of flyers but this time he has a large reference book(these books can't be checked out) and he just walks right past us. We try to get him to stop as best as we can(we can't use physical force unless under extreme circumstances, like physical violence against us or someone else) and he is just shoving passed us and it gets to the point where he is almost out side so we had to grab the book and he then begins to freak and won't let go of the book and he is just freaking yelling AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!. uhnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!, nuhnnnnnnnnnnnnn. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!.

He then lets go and heads back into the library. The head of the library is now there and is able to calm him down and got him to sit down. We called the police because it was obvious he had gotten away from a group home or something . He decided to leave and we had another guard follow him because we didn't want to see him get hurt or some stupid idiot hurt him for taking something . Eventually the police tracked him down with the guards help and I guess took him to get help

We have this one guy come in almost every other day. He appears to mentally handicapped due to an accident. He comes in with a bookbag with an xbox (the first one) and about 50 'new' games. He wants us to help him find cheat codes for every game there. It's like his handler or family member just drops him off there and leaves him for like 2-3 hrs. And during those 2-3 hrs we are taking care of him and helping him find those cheats because if we don't he'll hound us and interupt us trying to help other patrons. No fault to him...I'm just mad at the people that leave him there for hours on end.

Ah yes I seriously hate group homes who do that and this is a story I posted a while back in another thread relating to that

Well I noticed a few former Library workers posting here so that's good to see as they understand what I will mention maybe. I'm Security at the major main Library in my city and I have a variation on the Kid trouble makers. The Mentally disabled that get dropped off by there group homes. We have this one women who is in her early 40's but has the mental age of around 7 years old. She is in Monday to Friday 11am -9pm without fail. She usually gets dropped off by a group home worker or social worker but when it come time for her to go home at 9pm at night she has to take the bus home. The group home never picks her up at the end of the night so she has to wait downtown at night for the bus. The group home expects us to babysit her the entire day. We have to take her lunch/supper and put it in the staff fridge and get it for her when she wants it. Store her jacket and bags in our office, If she has appointment she will give us a sticky note and we have to reminder her about it. Since she has the mental age of about 7 she get's very scared really easy and will misinterpret the slightest things. If someone brushes up against her she thinks that the person punched her or if someone she doesn't know says something to her like "could you move, please" or something as harmless as Hello, how are you? she won't register it right away and when she does she can't remember exactly what they said so she thinks up the worse things and then thinks they said "fucking move, Bitch!" or "fucking N***er(she's Aboriginal by the way, not African-American) and when this happens she will freak out and start to cry and scream and takes us and staff a long time to calm her down. She'll even freak out if someone looks in her general direction for to long


There was this one time when she had an "accident" in her pants and was going completely ape shit. We could not calm her down at all. She just balling and screaming. She didn't have a change of clothes so I called her group home as we had there number encase of an emergency and when I called they told me this

GHA = Group home asshole
Me = well me of course
MHW = Mentally handi-cap women

Me: Hi I'm security over at the library and I understand that MHW lives at your group home, Well she has had an "accident" and is extremely upset and we can't calm her down. We need you to come down with a change of clothes and come get her

GHA: (in an irradiated tone) Well we can't come down there and she has a plan in these type of incidents, she should know what to do!

Me: Well she is very upset and doesn't have a change of clothes we really need you to come down and bring her some clothes

GHA: (Still in an irradiated tone) No we can't come down!, there are plans in place for these thing and she knows what she has to do

Me: Sir, Please she obviously can't think of "the plan" and won't let any of us help her we need you to come down

GHA: (even more irradiated tone)No!, she knows what she has to do, were not coming down! *click*

It took us another 30mins but finally we calmed her down and got her some clothes from lost and found.She has had a few "accidents" after this but this was the worse. I checked with my mom who had been working in and out of several group homes for around 10 years and she told me that" they are there responsible for them and that in these incidents they must send somebody down so I was pissed that day that the group home did nothing and kept on saying "she knows what she has to do" The thing is were are in a catch 22 with her. She doesn't mean to be a burden, she mentally handi-capped and can't help it but there are some days when you want to yell at her to fuck off and go away. I swear where just one big ass group home

Mr. Security! So the group home, who isn't doing their job, but are getting paid anyway, just dump the woman at your library? I would have called some state agency and reported them.

Oh, there was a meeting yesterday and we found out some groups come at night and feed the homeless in our area. They either give the food on the library's property or in front of City Hall, which is just across the street from us. These groups come and go, so it's usually diff. groups. Mostly because someone from the library tell them they can't feed the homeless on our property. This recent group parks on the street, making it hard for us to drive. Anyway, in yesterday's meeting the Chief of our library told us they were a group that goes dumpster diving and get thrown out food from restaurants to feed the homeless.
