  • .... it's a HANDGUN, I NEED your ID ...

    Really!! It's not hard!!

I'm guessing this guy probably didn't have his ID, only very few people throw fits like this (like .1%) and it's usually people up to no good, those without their ID or those who feel its their right to not have to show ID.

He wanted to look at a firearm ... a handgun.

Sure! I would be more than happy to hand you a $200+ handgun over the counter, as long as I have your ID in MY hand.

This doesn't mean I'll run a background check on you before I hand it over ... I just want an ID to hold on to (kept in a glass display case, in full view of the customer) because sometimes handguns have a habit of walking out the store. If I don't have your ID and you do walk out of the store with the gun, I will be in an apeshit lot of trouble, probably not only with the store, but probably with the police department because I would have allowed another weapon to go out into public and do LORD knows what ...

I am strict on this policy as it is store policy as well. I require ID for EVERYONE, young and old, for rifles and handguns. I always hand the ID back when they're through with looking. I don't care if the store down the street doesn't require it ... we do (although, I think they all do). And plus, if you don't have your ID, I know you're not going to purchase the gun because the background check requires PICTURE ID.

So, this guy threw an absolute tis-fit over it. He wanted to see a handgun. He looked old enough and American enough (yikes! I know, but you have to an american citizen before you can even touch a gun in a store). I asked for the ID and he just stares at me disbelievingly, as if I'm gonna say, "Juuuust kidding!"

Then he started dropping the f-bomb and "I can't believe this ...." mixed in with "ID" over and over again. That's when I told him, "it's store policy ... sometimes handguns have a habit of growing legs and walking out the store ..."

Lots of f-bombs come from this guy followed by 'store policy.' He was swearing so much it -- it was atrocious. I had to take a step back. In fact, now that I think about it ... that was a very angry reaction ... maybe he shouldn't be the type to even own a gun, let alone handle one ...

He walked out, swearing the whole way. Even his wife (who was just a little thing) was giving me dirty looks. She didn't join in his f-bomb tirade, but still ranted about having to show ID to, once again let me refresh your memory ... to handle a handgun.

Like I said before, a lot of people don't even mind. Some even hand me their whole wallet because they don't want to dig the ID out of the little annoying picture window compartment deal. If two people want to handle the gun, I ask for both of their IDs. A little extreme? Perhaps ... but I don't want to take any chances ... especially when firearms are involved ...

Yep, that there's a guy who should not be within arm's reach of a weapon. Mmhm.

I doubt he'd pass the background check or the mental test.

As a responsible gun owner and CCW(Carry Concealed Weapon) permit holder, I can confidently say that man is an idiot that should not be allowed anywhere near a loaded firearm. But on the other hand, I can kind of understand why he was upset. At every gun store I've been to I've never been asked to hand over my ID to look at/handle a gun. Then again, that is store policy here, and your store's policy on guns is obviously different. So yes, I can understand him being somewhat upset, but he shouldn't have thrown such a fit over policy concerning something as serious as a gun.

I guess they're lucky they don't live in a country that requires them to keep their ID/papers on them at all times, then.

Does he give cops as hard a time when he's pulled over?

It wouldn't surprise me if he does that anywhere else that requires ID before services/purchases are rendered. He's definitely somebody not suited to own a gun at all.

Oh, there's a great idea! Let's holler and curse at the person working with firearms and ammunition!

                I agree.

"I'm sorry but after that outburst I cannot let you hold a weapon even with an ID." then kick them out.

attitude problems do not mix well with weapons.

(and as a slightly off topic comment, i'm reminded of a tim allen video i saw regarding gun sales... forgot where i saw it tho. but anyway, before he became a famous actor he did some company training video on proper gun sales. actually it wasn't bad. just a lot of comments on being respectful but firm, and refusing sales for customers who were drunk, etc)

                  Yeah, I agree with PepperElf!

Most people who get argumentative over pulling out ID are borderline sociopathic anyway!

.....Wow. Just wow. People like that should stay far away from the gun store.

As a gun toting spit fire, I apologize for that [hopefully never] potential gun owner. You're allowed to kick him repeatedly.

That was the K-Mart training video. They aired it on that show "Before They Were Stars" way back when.

My mother actually watched it when she was training with K-Mart and he said that they weren't allowed to sell them to the US postal service either.

Oh boy, but if I worked with guns and ammunitions...I doubt I'd be in customer service for very long. Unless the comissary at the the psychiatric ward of Ryker's was hiring of course.

I can understand some places probably wouldn't require ID to see a gun over the counter ... but at a gun store, there's probably a camera or two watching you ...

I'd hate to say this, but I work in a pawn shop and although we have "dummy" cameras posted around, along with various signs - none of the cameras are actually recording ... So, we have to take our precautions and require ID in order to handle a firearm (unless you're one of our "gun" regulars, in which I know you're name and I know pretty confidently that you're not gonna walk out with a weapon and that you're definitely old enough ... )

But, yeah, I honestly was waiting for them moment to throw himself on the ground and starting kicking his legs and feet!

As for his wife, I was a bit surprised at her reaction as well, usually, wives are usually rolling their eyes and apologizing for husbands behavior - I guess not in this instance ...

Reminds me of what Homer said to the gun store clerk in the episode where he bought a handgun:

"If I had a gun, I'd kill you"

That guy should not be allowed to be in a gun store, never less touch or own one.
