  • "but my couch wont even fit in that!"

I return to the board for a quickie. I hope.
Since it's been a while, I work for a truck rental company, we give you equipment you do the work. Not always so bad, but moving is stressful and causes people to stop thinking and become SCs.
First customer of the day comes in, she had reserved a 26' ft truck, we didn't have it, but we had a 17' ft at half cost. I explain someone should have called her ahead of time and I'm sorry she didn't get advance notice, but I cant make a truck appear. Not good enough, she needs the 26' ft, or she can't move. Now she has LOTS of help, and its local, 20 to 30 miles? so second trip not the end of the world, but she won't have it, so on to the phones, try to call another center and find the elusive 26'ft. We really don't carry many, so finding something in high demand is a bitch.
Thankfully I found one, near where she's loading up too! Double bonus, get them to hold it and give her a milage break, because it is still an inconvenience, that i do agree with.
But after all this, she tells me she's supposed to get storage too... 10x10 room. If you need a 26'ft no way will that fit into the 10x10. But I have it, and what could i do about that, since they have to come back for it...
OKAY, first month free, cause you won't shut up after the first compensation. DONE.
She thanks me, to which I couldn't care, I'm still waking up, we just OPENED, and right before leaving says "I'm glad you found the 26'ft, I wouldn't even be able to get my couch into the 17'ft." I wanna know what couch is so BIG it needs a truck longer than 17ft...
And to top it off, when she came back to move her stuff into storage, she barely filled the truck with anything, any friggin 14'ft would have done it, but thats how i got to spend my first hour waking up.
Wasn't as quick as I'd hoped.

I think people forget that those trucks are not just so-many feet long, but they are also tall, and that stacking is your friend. Make it a game of Tetris, it'll all fit, trust me. I mean, you put in the couch, your mattress on it's side against the wall, table should be disassembled and leaned against the mattress...do you know how many boxes you can stack on a couch?!

haha, Nightwatch, you wanna teach my parents how to move? we had I think it was a 17 ft truck and took 3 trips, that could have been stacked into 2( they have way too much shit)

there were some turns we wouldn't have been able to get the 26 ft around

I had to leave so much stuff behind when I moved a few years ago, cause dad got a TRAILER instead of a truck. My nice wooden table, my couch, my NEW desk...

          But wha a douche.

When i moved into this house i couldn't even fill a standard size panel van with all my stuff...

But then i moved out of a shared house into this one. Thesedays i could probably fill one.

When I last moved we hired a truck and two men. One of them helped us move stuff out of the house to in front of the truck, the other played tetris. Man oh man he was good! There was not a square inch of space left in that truck!

Which was a pity, as the company had sent a smaller truck than requested, so we had to make two trips.

(BTW, 17' is 17 ft. If you say 17' ft then it's 17 feet feet - is that a 34' truck then? LOL)

So do people that own small cars. I had a little 2-door Tercel once. The things I got to fit in the back seat was simply mind-boggling (and no comments from the peanut gallery )

I've moved using nothing but a 1991 Acura Integra. Followed by using a 1995 Honda Civic.

The Integra is smaller than the Tercel, but with a hatchback. I managed to fit everything I owned into it (in a few trips) except for the bed itself.

Speaking of Tetris, we only use paper bags at my store... so most of the baggers are quite familiar with Tetris by now.

See, now, I had the opposite problem. I tried to just get a van and wound up with a 26' truck at no extra charge because they had nothing else to offer me. I have to say, my dresser, disassembled desk, TV, and 5 boxes looked sad and lonely in the back of that truck.

I almost took my T-Bird with me, but it wouldn't start and I wasn't about to push it into the back of the truck.

                          I drive a 2001 VW bug.

I can fit everything I own in that car and still have enough room for myself to drive comfortably.

Depends on the size of the box and the couch

                            I was using 2.5' x 3' boxes and an 8 foot couch

That's why you do what my old roommate did. (He had a small '89 Porsche)

You tie a sturdy rope between the tow hitch of pick-up truck, and the front of the cars frame. You then get a sorry ass schmuck (i.e. ME), to steer the Porche while it's being dragged at 2mph behind the truck for 5 miles.

Oh, and did I mention said Porche (obviously) had no working AC, the windows wouldn't roll down, and it was 90 degrees outside? ... yeah, that was fun
