  • Will you take a bad check?

    #1
SC: Hi, I would like to pay my insurance bill over the phone with a check.
Me: I'm sorry, I can't take a check over the phone. you could either bring it into the office or we could pay it over the phone with the debit card attached to that account.
SC: No I can't use the debit card, I dont have any money in the account, I'll just bring you guys in the check instead....
:::Looks up account, sees 3 bounced checks:::
Me: on second thought ma'am, you had better bring a money order.

SC: You guys are charging me extra on my insurance because you claim you found out "Barry Randomguy" lives in my house. I never heard of "barry Randomguy"
me: no problem, I can get that corrected ::makes change::
:::SC then complains for 10 more minutes about other random things:::
sc: ok I'd like to make my payment with my debit card....
me: ok, and the card is in your name?
sc: no, its under Barry Randomname....

    ::: sigh:::

Sure, I'll take a bad cheque! I'll add it to the pile along with shares in a West African oil field and some magic beans.

Do they really think that you won't look through the account? And how is 'I don't have any money in the account' supposed to make you think she'll pay?

Well they may have gotten away with that once or twice before. If a client comes in and their policy cancels wed but they get paid on a friday. I'll have them write me a check, I'll tell the insurance company we got it but then let it sit in "processing" at the agency for 2 days.

I'm a nice guy, I try to help when I can. but you bounce one on me after I go out on a limb for ya you're done

I once had a guy say to me... "Hey, I ran out of checks, but can I just pay with my routing number? Also, there's no money in there."

A prime example of not knowing when to keep your mouth shut. See, I'd just have asked about the routing number.

I'm gonna start paying my bills with money from the game Life. The smallest bill is $1000.00.

I did once take a check from someone in the store after her debit card was declined. But then she was an employee and I figured she was good for it. And if not, it wasn't like they didn't know where to find her...

You don't know how many customers call me up and ask me permission to write a company a bad check.

No we don't. Please....tell us! I work in the restaurant industry, and outside of Minnesota, generally speaking such establishments do not take personal checks, so I really don't have to deal with this particular phenomenon.

Me: And what is the question?
SC: Can I write a check? My direct deposit doesn't come until Friday (it's Monday).
Me: I cannot suggest writing a check until funds are available in the account.
SC: But I need to pay a bill... is it ok to write a check?
Me: The bank cannot give you permission to write a check without having sufficient funds in the account.
SC: But I need to write a check. Is it ok?
Me: The bank suggests having funds available in the account to write a check.
                      SC: You're useless.

Last I heard, UK law makes it illegal to knowingly write a cheque against an account that has insufficient funds to cover the cheque.

Useful tidbit for those on this side of the pond.

Over here you can be as big an idiot as you want, as far as I know.

My bank has gone so far as to add a warning to their online service that says, 'With technological advances, checks clear much faster. Do not write a check unless you have funds in your account to cover it.' Some of these bad check idiots tend to forget it's not the 1940's any more, and they sure aren't processed by hand these days.
