  • Internet techie type question...

OK, seriously. Why is it that I cannot get to my3cents.com? Clearly the site itself is not down. There are several letters linked from the PFB forum and people are commenting so obviously they can get to the site. My parents can get to it. But my roommate and I cannot. Is there something with our internet that would cause this? I get the "Internet Explorer can not display web page" thing. I also tried Safari and it doesn't work on there, either. This is the third day in a row.

    Anyone?

For me, it was notalwaysright.com. For the longest time, I could get there from work, but not from home. As near as I was ever able to determine, the remote end was dropping my connection.

Since you're getting online, chances are very good that it's not your machine and there's nothing you can do other than hope the problem clears up sometime soon.

Most likely issue I can think of is that its DNS is not triggering right. Below is the IP address for the site. try putting that in.

          66.36.231.51

Yeah - if that IP address works, go see whats up with your DNS settings. We just had a computer at work that had a virus and it jacked its DNS settings. If they have been changed (that you did not do), get some scans going.

I'd bet money that it has been added to your hosts file by some spyware/virus scan software.

I think I can provide some insight...

Sometimes when the website changes its IP address, the DNS servers either do not update it, or take a few days to update it. You should try OPENdns That worked for me right quick!

I've known viruses do that, but only for virus removal sites. AV software? Interesting thought. Never heard of them getting wrong, but I'm no IT professional.

So, have we decided where this thread belongs now?

The IP address did not work. I'm going to ask my dad about the other thing (since I know very little about the inner workings of the intarwebs and such). Thanks all; I'll let you know if it works.

Hey, it was moved twice, the first time was a misclick to Unsupportable. The buttons are like, right next to each other.

A quick couple things to try.

First did you put the http:// prior to the IP address? I have known some browsers to get picky about that when going by IP.

Second, one quick test to see where the issue lies is to do a trace route. On a windows machine, open a command prompt and type in tracrt 66.36.231.51 and hit enter. When you start seeing timeouts, that would be the location of the problem. Generally the first two or three hops will be your ISP's network. Anything beyond that is in the wilds of the internet.

Definitely advisable to set your DNS to OpenDNS even if you aren't having problems.
