  • Windows Issues

Well I have been looking on google for quite sometime, used some registry cleaners like RegCure, to no avail. Whenever I click shutdown or restart on my system, it will not actually do anything. Windows does provide an error message or start shutting down/restarting and then hanging. It will outright not do anything once the command is executed.

your best bet would be to reinstall windows. there could be multiple problems with your windows that could have multiple causes (malware, shoddy programming, weird errors that no one could predict), so a fresh install would take care of everything in one fell swoop. it'll also make sure you don't miss an issue

just make sure you backup your important files first.

I'd second making sure you have cleaned out all the spyware/malware first. I've noticed one of the first signs of significant spyware issues is slow or stalling shutdowns. Update your sweepers, then physically disconnect from the internet while you scan. It might save you the time involved with a full reinstall.

I sometimes have the same problem. For some reason, if I do the shutdown a second time, it works fine. Have you tried doing that?

I can't find anything wrong with mine either, so mine probably also needs a reinstall. Not sure I want to go thru all that crap, because I have so many programs and settings to take care of, it takes me days to do it all.

Have you looked inside Event Viewer to find the exact error text? and/or a KB article it's related to?

Could you copy and paste that error text out here for me? I'm curious. I wonder if there's a service or some other software/app in the background that's stubborn.

see if the command line works - sometimes I've had issues that only a command line shutdown would work

(These commands can be run from the run box - you don't have to use a command window)
              Shutdown:
              Code:
              shutdown -t 0
              Reboot:
              Code:
              shutdown -r -t 0

There is no error message, you tell it to shutdown/restart, nothing happens, it just sits there. Even when programs or windows tells you to reboot after an update or installation, it will remain doing nothing.

I will try the command lines when I get home and see what happens.

This sounds like a program that is running in the background not closing properly, holding up the whole process. Do you have any IM type programs that may be running? Maybe a weather checker that runs as a little icon on taskbar near the clock? Try closing all those types of things before shutting down and see how that works out.
