  • "Everyone else lets me do that. Why won't you?"

My wife had one of the best stories I've heard in a long time. The other day, she was getting the week's worth of groceries at Publix. One of her stops is the deli to get lunch meat for the kids. Everyone took a number, including the 70 some old woman two persons behind my wife. In front of my wife, this younger woman ordered a pound of bologna. While the deli employee was cutting the meat for this woman, the older woman piped up and said, "Oh, I was going to get some of that. Would you mind cutting up six slices of that for me?" The deli employee told her sure, that was not a problem being she already had the bologna out. Afterward, when the employee wrapped up the bologna and priced it for both customers, the older woman with the six slices of bologna says, "Thanks, and I also need a half pound of swiss cheese." The deli employee told her she was sorry, but she was not the next person in line and would have to wait her turn. "But, you already got my bologna for me, so you need to also slice my cheese for me." The employee told her, "I'm sorry, maam, but you are not the next person in line and will have to wait your turn." This woman got upset and said, "Well, this is unfair. Everyone else back there lets me do that." She then turned on her heel and left, leaving the six slices of bologna on the deli counter.

What pisses off anyone in this story is number one, the woman was trying to cut in line, no matter what order in the line she was in. And secondly, she wasted a few slices of bologna that she probably never intended to buy anyway (turned out later, someone said she always says things like, "Oh, I changed my mind") What gets me is why they don't turn this woman away for that. Food is being wasted and most likely it has to be thrown away.

Businesses should turn away these customers to the competition. Let the competition be the ones who lose the money and go under.

Amazing. I almost thought for sure someone would have complained and told a few stories about this post. I guess I'm the only one with experiences like this.

What? The only person with the elderly who think they are entitled to something or that think they can get away with something because they're a senior citizen?

I have something that happened yesterday where an elderly lady tried to pull a fast one on my drivers...not related to waiting, but related to the topic of an elderly scammer...

When you are a basic member - in this state - your membership only covers 10 miles of towing. No exceptions. Most states only allow 3 - 5 miles - so it's amazing that here, you get 10!

Driver gets on location and knows ahead of time that the tow is going to be 17 miles. The member will have to pay for the 7 extra miles. She pulls the "I had my vehicle towed yesterday and they gave me the senior citizen special discount where I get an extra ten miles for free."

He called me and asked about this because usually our drivers are the last to know if the company pulls something like that (I know, doesn't make sense, but welcome to my world) I informed him that this is not the case and never has been or will be. He asks that I call her to tell her this. So I do and the conversation goes:

ME: Hello, my driver informed me that you told him of a senior citizen special?
SC: [in this case "sneaky customer"] Yes.
ME: I'm sorry, but your membership covers 10 miles and there is no senior citizen special. You will have to pay the driver for the overage miles when he reaches the tow destination.
      SC: Yes.
      Me: Okay?
      SC: Yes. Okay.

I was ready for an argument but she probably realized that she did not have a leg to stand on and I wasn't going to budge!

I never heard of a senior discount on towing. But, I'm sure it happens somewhere. In Florida, senior discounts have become as common as the VCR. Restaurants I used to frequent now have them, causing greater crowds of them to appear and causing more upset with the "That's not enough discount for my discount" bullshit.

What's even more irritating is in restaurants, like Cracker Barrel, everyone has to wait in line, or put their name in and wait to be called on. You still will get that one person who will try to skip, or make the claim, "But I put my name there thirty minutes ago" when you know they didn't. And, then, they'll try to get a free meal or discounted one when they have a large party in tow.

Ah, my beloved Florida.. "God's waiting room." I lived there for 3 years. Too many damn old people (some elderly folks are just delightful, but others are just flat-out EVIL)!

Isn't that true of any age group, though?

What was wrong with this woman's car that she had to have it towed 2 days in a row? Maybe she just got tired of driving and figured she call and get a ride home for her and her car

Yes, but senior citizens tend in my experience (the sucky ones) to show MUCH less restrain when getting entitled.

I'm pretty sure I've brought this up here before, but senior citizen discounts confuse me. Why does this particular age group need a discount?

You know why I think some of us here find seniors to be troublesome as customers? Because of these discounts and the attitude that breeds them. Maybe seniors just get so used to being catered to that they demand special treatment even in situations it isn't offered (like tow service).

Personally, I've never found elderly customers to be any better or worse than others. I think their particular brand of suckiness tends more towards the cranky and entitled. But they're never the ones that yap on their cell phones through an entire transaction or leave children unattended. Every age group comes with problems, it seems.

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

In my not-so-humble opinion, it's the "Respect Your Elders" crap* they were raised with. They had to kiss up to the gray-hairs when they were young and, by god, they're gonna make sure you kiss up to them.

*Disclaimer: My default attitude towards all people is respect until they do something to change my attitude, but just because you're older than me doesn't mean you're automatically wiser, smarter, or in any way better than I am.

I've been waiting in line before and some old crone (or geezer) will somehow think that they're entitled to move to the front of the line because they're elderly. The only thing separating you from other people is your age! It's not like you're some superhuman being with magical powers. >_>
For the most part, I don't care about what everyone else is doing, or what is popular.

The instance I hear the words "Everyone else lets me do it" they're going to have a hard time getting anything through to me. I occasionally got customers trying that stunt. What I use to to say when people asked that was "Because if I let you do it you're going to bug my coworkers next time you come here."

I also don't understand why elders feel a need to get special privileges because of age. A lot of my elder customers were pricks to begin with and they all seemed to talk in the Daily Show's impersonation of Dick Cheney.

In fairness, a lot of elderly people are on a limited budget because they can no longer work. If not on a government pension, they are living off superannuation payments or savings and thus can't go and get a loan quite so easily, as they have no 'fixed' income.
                          Same reason students get discounts.
I'm OK with discounts and I'll happily go out of my way for polite elderly people with genuine needs - ie, speak louder or slower or extra help with access and carrying items - but the rude entitlement ones shouldn't be coddled just because they're old. Before I started in customer service, I thought old people were polite, gentle and better spoken than the younger population - did I ever get a shock the first time a 70 year old bellowed at me "go get f***ed"!

I also seemed to be a magnet for 80+ year old gentlemen trying out pick up lines (not the sweet 'twinkle in the eye type' neither)

I'd love it if you tried that one on a SC but it would probably go over their head and you would just get a hostile "Huh?"
