  • ...what just happened?

Tried to connect to the internet on my laptop computer. (I have dial-up).

I tried a few times and got error number 1717 every time: The interface is unknown.

Called up my ISP, who googled the error message and told me to fix it I'd have to go into the registry and muck around with something in there. I wouldn't know the first thing to do there.

I decided to try and restart the computer first, and that cleared up the error, because I'm talking to you now.

I'm just wondering, was the person at my ISP right? If I get this error again, and I can't fix it by restarting the computer, am I going to have to go into the registry and hope I don't fuck things up worse?

Vista it looks like, and the laptop brand is irrelevant. Just the EventLog failed to load.

      Straight from microsoft.

That said, if a restart doesn't fix it(because the EventLog vanished as opposed to not loading) then going into the registry and following the directions above will fix the problem. Just remember to follow the directions as shown. Messing around with the registry can cause problems, but with the right map, it's not so bad. Just remember the basic tennant of avoiding more problems:

        yes. omg yes....

i worked on computers for a few years in the navy, and i still won't mess with the registry unless i have documentation saying exactly what to change.

and your isp sucks in my opinion if they just tell someone "go mess with your registry"... cos that's bad advice in my opinion
