  • Sucky unprofessional manager makes scene in crappy corner shop

I bought some meat from a local corner shop and brought it home, I've never brought meat before and my mum needed it, this is when all the local corner shops were just about to close, I gave the guy a list and he said were closed, and then he said what I have left i'll give you,

not knowing until I got home the guy gave me complete rubbish which is not even edible and made me sick yesterday (yes I puked up)

anyways two parts, I brought two sets of meat, one I puked up and the other which I put in the freezer to return to the store and get my money back as it wasn't even edible.

I go into the store I explain the meat is not clearly something they should be selling and the sales assistant goes to me, speak to the store manager and so I do.

I explain to the store manager, Ill pay for the other things I brought I just want to return this meat -

He said to me - We'll cut of something from the meat (dno what it was probs what made me sick)

I said to him - Brother I don't want you to do that the meat is not good.

He start then getting agressive about how he's been offended and I said I've been to every other corner shop to get my meat and I can eat it without puking it up.

Working in customer service, I said: I'm sorry if I offended you but I didn't mean to.

He said: Im not refunding it
I said: why not its clearly not edible
He said: It's frozen I cannot resell it
Me: I put it in the freezer so that the meat wouldn't go off, you can leave out for a while and it'll be unfrozen
    Him: I'm not doing that

He walks to the back of the store where the meat section is, (there was about 10 people in this small shop)

He said come here to the meat section, I didn't I was stood by the sales assistant. He comes by the sales assistant and said brother I'm not returning it, its frozen, again I said leave it out. He then goes on to says hes offended and walks to the till and brings out the money and throws it to me like Im a beggar.

I was like ok, keeping calm not even shouting, being a wanker and he was so unprofessional behaving like a idiot infront of the customers and when I was walking out he was saying something I don't want customers like you. I said fuck off loudly so everyone could hear.

I'm never going to a small business again, when I go Tesco I NEVER have had any issues.

    I was there for 10 minutes -
Do you think I was being a sucky customer or him being a sucky manager??

I work a lot with fresh food. Please don't avoid small businesses. Just avoid the crappy ones. A good small business, especially something like a butchers are fantastic. A friend of mine has his own butchers just a few doors down from my store and it's fantastic. My favourite lines are the freshly baked pies he sells.

His least favourite line is the directions I give to prospective customers. "It's just up the road between the undertakers and the Vets. Try his pies, I don't know what kind of meat he uses but they're gorgeous."

You can get the right size, of the right cuts, of the right meat. He'll also be more knowledgeable in the best ways to prep and cook your meat.

The only* thing I can think of that you did wrong was freezing the meat. When you freeze and defrost meat the colour changes. The ice crystals that form in the meat break down some of the cellular membranes and can also denature (kinda kill/destroy) some of the proteins. This means it will look very different from before you froze it.

By the way this is sometimes a useful first step if you need to tenderise some poor quality, or unusually tough meat.

Even so it's not sucky, it's just what anyone would do to stop their fridge smelling like roadkill.

The really sucky thing is that he wouldn't accept the meat because he couldn't re-sell it. I mean come ON! Some-one brings back meat that they say made them ill. And his first thought is "Gee, can I sell this on to some other shmuck?"

I do wonder if it was at least second hand when you got it?

I just want to add that just because meat looks off, that's not necessarily the case. A really prime peice of beef that's been hanging for 3 or 4 weeks will definately be a little bit black at the edges. It will also be delicious.

    * You also told him to "fuck off". To anyone who missed the rest of the conversation it does make you out to be a bit of an SC. A better reply (oh if only there was a time machine for clever ripostes) would be "well I'm glad we can agree on something". Then smile, shake his hand...

    And run.

...straight to the Health Department. Seriously, file a complaint mentioning that not only did his meat make you sick, but he wanted to resell it. Just stick to the deadpan facts with no other add-ins. They don't care how badly you were treated, just that he is a threat to the public health.

definitely write a complaint to the local environmental health office. State the facts. Hopefully they'll spring an inspection on him while he's defrosting some meat he acquired 2 weeks back.
