  • someone got my old job and . . .

In December, I got transferred to go and work in a brand new shop. A dream proposition for me. My position is Duty manager, what I always have been for 3 years now (in several stores).

I kept in touch with co-workers at the old store. One of the supervisors there got my old job there. So we're both duty managers (no.2 to the manager).

Now, let me explain something. Duty manager salary is graded by the sales of the store they work in. So duty manager in a £20k per week shop would earn less than someone in a £40k shop. The same applies for managers.

The only exception is when a manager or duty is moved from a £40k shop to a £20k shop for example. If it was their preference to move, then their salary would drop. If the needs of the company forced them to move, their salary would remain the same.

The store i worked in was taking £32k per week when i worked there. I was paid at a rate of £8.44 per hour.

The store is now taking £38k per week, 6k more. The new duty manager is being paid £7.67 per hour. Nothing else has changed.

She questionned this (she knew how much i earned) and they blamed it on an admin error. I should never have been earning £8.44 per hour apparently. Their area manager backup up this arguement. I told her this is bullshit and its totally unfair. She has a family, 2 kids. I have no dependants. I feel guilty about this.

To add insult to this, My salary remained static when I moved to the new shop, yet the new shop is only taking £22k per week! Makes me feel even worse!

For clarity, supervisors are on £6.67 and customer service assistants are on £5.85. These are the four rates of pay in a store.

    This is so unfair.

As best as I can tell, it's not your fault.

      1) The only time you should feel bad about your wage is if you lied, cheated, or stole to get it. You seem to have done none of those. Stop the angst over that.

      2) It may seem a bit callous, but it was (at least partly) her decision to have a family. Stop feeling bad because she has dependants and you don't. Again, not something to dwell so much over.

      3) If you want to focus emotions, be angry with the company. It seems like they are trying to play the system, hoping your coworker didn't know better, and now they're scrambling having been caught out.

Oh, yeah. One place I worked, I qualified for a shift differential. No one told me, even though I was hired to work graveyard from the beginning. Then the swing team leader mentioned that she was getting a differential. I contacted HR and got a chunky little check to fix the mistake. I sincerely believe it was the manager who did it, because she didn't like me, but she did like the team leader. She seemed to fail to mention the shift differential to a bunch of other swing and graveyard workers who weren't her buddies; I was happy to inform them of the extra money.
