  • FIRE!! FIRE!!

So it would seem that yesterday somebody thought it would be a great idea to set all the cardboard bales outside the store, along the fence, on fire.

We didn't notice a thing. The 911 call came from a neighbor across the street who saw the smoke and flames.

After the fire department put the fire out, they had somebody go on the forklift and pull all the bales out so they could tear them apart and put out any smoldering that could be going on inside. Result: the entire driveway along the side of the store is covered in charred, blackened, soggy cardboard covered in fire-retardant foam.

Today, we had a contractor come in and clean up the mess with a front-end loader. They filled up a dump truck and a dumpster.

The fire left a bunch of scorch marks on the wall the bales were up against (not a wall of the store), and burned up the wooden slats in the fence above and melted the chain-link. I do hope they get that fixed soon. It's a pretty steep drop from the public sidewalk above, through the fence, and down to the asphalt below.

And I missed it. I miss all the exciting things that happen at work.

Somebody set bales on fire where I work too. It was some kids who stuffed their lit cigarettes into the bales while frantically trying to hide them from their dad. You're right, the good stuff happens when you're not around!

Happened to us before too. We have a solid metal fenced compound outside the store with refrigeration kit in it. We used to keep cardboard cages next to this. But one time someone set them on fire. The metal fence still has scorch marks on it. The fire was so intense that it melted part of one of the freezer condensors, THROUGH the metal fence and a 12 inch gap. But the condensors still work. 3 years on.

We've never had anyone set anything we had lying about on fire.

We did have someone park a stolen beater and have a car-b-cue in our driveway, however.

We had to have an asphalt repair crew in to do some patching on our driveway afterwards, too.
