  • Have customers got worse?

I was talking to some fellow crew recently and we all agreed that customers are getting worse. Especially airline passengers. People just seem so self entitled. I spoke to a cab driver and we both agreed the public are getting worse.

When I worked retail part-time at college several years ago things were no way as bad as they are now. Maybe that's because I only worked with people 8 hours a week rather than full-time and only dealt with them for a matter of minutes rather than hours on a plane.

Why do you think people are getting worse?

I am SO glad not to be dealing with the public anymore!

I think it's more that the cost of living is so high now, and people are paying top dollar for most things, so they expect top service for their money.

What some people see as self-entitlement, the customers see as simply getting their money's worth.

That's how I see it. I may be wrong.
Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.

It's funny, because I've been reading a number of articles how people are getting nicer since the economy tanked. People are doing more to help their fellow man, will donate to food banks, etc. Yet I laugh each time I read it, because these people clearly never worked retail. I've had a number of people demand things as if the world owed them something. When times get tough, people get down and dirty. Money is tight, and people resent spending it. Not everyone is this way of course, and most of my customers are lovely. But I am noticing more suck than usual.

I would have to say that are getting much worse. I am routinely having to hang up on at least three to four customers a night now whereas before it was maybe one or two a week.

Last night I had two calls I had to tell the ladies on the phone if they could not tell the men in the background to stop screaming obscenities and threats towards me I was going to hang up and in both incidents I was going above and beyond my position requirements by calling the florists directly to find out the ETA of their orders. I think I'm just no longer going to go the extra mile for anyone behaving in a bad manner..

              Short fratch free version: Yes.

There have and will always be SCs, and while they remain a small percentage of overall customers, they are more vocal, more aggressive and more demanding than they have been in previous decades.

Passengers have got worse...on every flight there are a lot of people who barge past me, can't say please or thank you, ignore the crew, argue with the crew and just act like morons.

Flying has deffo made me lose my faith in human beings. I prefer animals.

My theory: Slowly the world has become much more casual. It has some benefits, such as women not having to spend 20 hours doing their hair before they go to the grocery store anymore. But it comes with some downfalls, such as much less courtesy.

This theory is proven by when I do something basic like saying please, thank you, and leaving a decent tip and get a response of, "omg!! You're sooo awesome!! WOW!"
I get confused cuz it was common courtesy and this poor abused csr is almost in tears of joy about it.

There has actually been a noticeable trend towards narcissistic behavior in the last couple of decades. An example of the extreme over reaction to the low self esteem issues of youth as discovered in the late 60's early 70's.

There is an interesting book on this subject: The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement by Twenge and Campbell

To me it seems like certain customers are becoming more entitled because they assume every business is tanking in this economy and that, by choosing to spend money in our store, they are in effect riding in on some golden chariot to save us from the bankruptcy monster.

The problem is, I don't really get paid enough to treat someone like royalty. I treat everyone with courtesy and respect, but I am expected to treat customers like the greatest thing ever, you're going to have to raise my wage a big. There's only so much I'm willing to do for less than $11/hour.

Ehh.... customers in general I can't really speak for. Airline customers, though, I think it's probably a case of 'shit rolls downhill'. Air travel just keeps getting worse- in the US, at least- with delays, canceled flights, increases in the number and amount of various fees... This leads to a bunch of irate folks who want to take it out on anyone nearby, preferably someone who A) is related, even peripherally, to what has aggravated, and B) can't readily fight back.

Various corporate and political decisions shit on the customer, the customer turns 'round and shits on you. And the great circle of shittiness continues

I'd be surprised if anyone but the SM at the "GameStores" here makes anywhere near that amount.

Precisely, I was subtly implying I make less than that without giving exact figures.
