I remember this one very well . . . that's one of the best commercials from the 70's IMO.

Ditch, that commercial used to give me the willies too when it aired and I think we're about the same age.

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH0U2...eature=related

and and update from 1998 (??)
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iwHO7WONk0&NR=1

I remember the first 2 from the late 60's early 70's in my tweens

if only the ad had real impact (I know it did at the time but I KNOW people just moved past it)

There's a Simpsons episode that uses that.....

"don't look behind you..." and I think there is a scream as the credits roll.

yup where Homer takes over the city trash department (from a character voiced by Steve Martain) and they stuff all the trash in a hole in the ground or a cave. then they move the whole town 10 miles away.

That PSA always made me sad when i was a kid. And I was sure that the end of the world was coming soon because of the pollution.

Character was Ray Patterson. I loved that episode! Especially where Mayor Quimby gets Patterson to take back over for Homer. Something like...

"I'm not much on speeches. So I just want to say...you're all screwed, and I leave you to wallow in your own filth. Good Bye!"

Moe: "He's right, he's not much on speeches."

I work for a small town's Public Works, so this hits a little close to home (and the truth) for me...

Penn and Teller roasted those PSA's in a episode of Bull Shit. That season is on DVD now--enjoy.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!
