  • Sometimes the simplest solution works the best.

My office is consolidating (we're stopping the lease on 3 floors) and I've been in charge of all the decomisioning etc.. of all the IT equipment (LAN, switches, old equipment, etc..).

We had a conference call the other day and they couldn't decide how to handle the cabling that goes from floor to floor.

They need to have the fiber cables deactivated to prevent anyone trying to access our network - and rightfully so.

    - They didn't want to put a firewall on the ports on the server, those ports might be needed for other things later on.

    - They don't want to spend the money to have someone come in and pull them all though.

They spent half an hour trying to decide what to do, then little old me, the lowest person on the call pipes in:

"How about if I just unplug the fiber cables that go to the other floors from our server?"

Of course there is silence on the call for about 10 seconds. Then they decided that it wasn't a bad route to go.

And they get paid how much to think of these solutions?

It's not just people in charge, draggar. I see a miserable lack of logicical thinking skills these days from even intelligent people. The easiest approach should always be at least looked at first.

Feynman (professional physicist, amateur psychologist) described this phenomenon himself - apparently the reason people don't mention the simple solutions is because they believe someone must have already considered it, and rejected it for some reason.
