  • Girl who did not have her wallet

According to the parking office, anyone not having any $ to pay for their parking has to get an IOU from them.

The phone inside the booth rings. I look up, & there is a car at the exit gate.

me: "Visitor parking booth. How may I help you?"
girl: "Yeah...I forgot my wallet. Can you raise the gate, & I will can pay later?"
me: "I'm sorry, but per the parking office rules anyone not having any $ has to get an IOU from the parking office. I'm sorry, but I am not allowed to raise the gate."
girl: "But there are cars behind me. Can't you just raise the gate, & I'll go back inside after exiting?"
me: "I'm sorry, but you will have to tell them to back up."
girl: "But there are cars behind me. Can't you just raise the gate, & I'll go back inside after exiting?"

I transfer the call to the Parking office. She speaks to them at the call box, but she does not back up. She sits at the exit gate in her car for several minutes, & then she literally "smashes" the call button with her hand.

Campus police arrive. The cop gets out of the car & goes up to her. He motions for the traffic behind her to back up. She then backs up. She exits several minutes later.

I have often wondered what would happen if someone couldn't pay the parking ramp fee, and also could not back out of line because of other cars. I never thought the solution would involve making the other cars back out of line. I know that wouldn't make me very happy, as a customer who CAN pay to get out and would like to do so ASAP.

Makes me glad I work in a grocery store where we can either suspend or cancel transactions.

I normally have maybe 1 cancel a month. I had 2 today. One because our EBT (food stamp) system was offline - if we refuse a food stamp customer, we're subject to massive fines and may not be able to accept electronic food stamps in the future. I did an inventory of everything they were buying and told them it was on the store today. When they argued, I explained why it was on the store and basically told them "Look, this isn't up to me... if we refuse someone with EBT, we're subject to huge fines and can lose our license to take EBT. Seriously, it's on us today, your money isn't any good for this. No ma'am, I'm not taking your cash on this, like I said, we can risk huge fines on this. It's on us, don't worry about it, we make a huge profit on everything else, this won't hurt us one bit." It was only $25 worth of goods, pocket change for us, we average well over $100k a day. It was basically some meat, cheese, and bread. The store was probably out about $5 for the entire purchase. I'm just worried that I may have offended her by offering the free food after her foodstamp card didn't go through.

The other was when someone opened their wallet and realized their CC wasn't there. I asked them if they'd be able to get another form of payment before we closed (this was at 8:45, we close at 10:00). They said they'd come back tomorrow, so I had the transaction canceled. We can suspend transactions, but only until the cashier that suspended it clocks out for the day. Hence the cancel.

Happened to me once (I was the "guy behind who had to back out so the guy with no money could turn back") at a bridge toll. Definitely didn't make me happy, especially since I was pulling a 53 foot trailer.

Translation: I screwed up and it is inconveniencing other people. Instead of fixing this problem like an adult, I will whine about it to you and further inconvenience everyone behind me who, though I am using them as an excuse to get my way, I actually do not give a crap about.

That's why I love how our toll bridges here work (both of them!) -- they have a little u-turn area off to the side, and if someone doesn't have the dosh, the booth workers can stop people from leaving the tollbooths (just in the lanes they will need to cross) for 30 seconds so that the person who's short can get in there, hit the service road, and get to an ATM. Minimal muss/fuss ^_^
