A quick bit of background as to how our express checkouts are set up.
Basically, they're in the shape of an S. Something a bit like this:

The PA phones for these registers are located on the registers facing <--. They are also within fairly easy reach of anyone, however most people do not know how to use the phone.
Last night, I served a mother and her son. The kid was probably about two. Because she only had a few items and instead of him playing with the EFTPOS machine, I wound up handing the groceries to him one at a time (bar the jars and produce). She then shuffled him down a bit so he wouldn't play with the EFTPOS machine. (the kid was in the cart instead of the child seat, but that's another topic-the mother had a firm grip on the cart though) So the kid sees the phone, grabs it and starts playing with it, pretending that he's calling mummy on the phone!
Cue everyone in my line and me laughing.
Fortunately, he didn't set off the PA function, so he was harmless, but mum put the phone back for me and apologised.
