  • Having to resign

I only work part time at supermarket deli. Due to my husbands busy work schedule I am limited to when I can work. We have two children and no family locally to watch them for us. It isn't worth the cost for daycare or babysitters when I only work 15 to 24 hours a week. Ok background done.

At the beginning of the school year this year I gave my manager a list of all the school holidays and stated that I could not work any of those days. The schedule went up today for next week. And I am scheduled for Saturday, Tues., Wed., Thur. and Friday. At first I was happy to have the extra shifts because my kids birthdays are coming up. After I got home I checked my e-mail and one of my kids teachers sent a reminder that there is no school next Friday. I double checked the printout I had of days off and sure enough that was on it. So when the kids got home I took them to the store (I needed to shop anyways). I went to talk to my boss. She informed me; "Too bad. She couldn't keep re-arranging the schedule to suit me. We are short staffed." I am always willing to work extra when needed and if available. I am not going to leave my 8 & 9 yr old girls home alone for 7 hours. Not only is it illegal it goes against everything I believe in as a parent.

It sucks I liked having the extra money. The odds of finding another part time job that will take me with my limited schedule is slim to none.

PS. One question. In my resignation letter I listed the reason including her ignoring my availability. Should I CC the store manager?

Sure. If you're resigning, it can't hurt anything. Though maybe BCC instead.

And now you are shorter staffed.
To err is human, to blame someone else shows good management skills.

You sure you want to resign? Why mess up a good thing, just call in sick.

I know I know, it isn't honest and any sensible person would realize you weren't really ill. But I'd take advantage of any workable hours and income they give me until they let me go or I just can't stand it anymore. You did give notice and they later changed their mind. As long as you keep your head down, you should be able to last (hopefully) through the holidays. Many stores are hiring this time of year and are somewhat more forgiving of employee call-ins. Only you know whether you want to keep working in this environment.

On the other hand, NOW is the time to find another p/t job. You certainly won't be finding any after Christmas.

I will admit it is tempting but I just isn't honest. I pride my self on being honest. I also do not want to cause problems for my husband. He is in management at the same store (another department).

In that case, call in with the truth. You couldn't find someone to care for your kids and you can't leave them at home alone. You've already given warning that you needed to do this and I'd suggest reminding your manager again at a calmer moment when he/she is less distracted and frazzled. If this is the first time this has happened, I'd hate to see you lose the extra income because of it. Unless there are other reasons you'd prefer to quit, that is.

You want to be honest? Here ya go:

"I can't make it into work today. I have anal glaucoma. I can't see my arse coming into work today because my kids can't stay at home alone when no one else will look after them."

ROFLMAO I love the glaucoma statement. Too late though. I quit. I thought I would feel guilty but I am actually happy. It is like a huge weight has lifted off my shoulders. I will be able to actually do stuff with my kids on the weekends because I won't have to work them anymore. I have not had a weekend day off in two months. I didn't mention in the first thread. I am in the lucky situation where I do not have to work. Having extra was nice but not necessary. We can make all of our needs on one salary.

I talked to the store manager, he was not happy that my availability was ignored. The store can get into big trouble for that if I wished to pursue it with corporate. I'm not. He offered to rearrange things for me but I told him I think it is just best that I leave. I'm tired of worrying about making my schedule work with my hubby's. I just left the letter of resignation on my manager's desk because she had gone home before I got to work yesterday and I won't be back till Tuesday. If she gives me any flack about the short notice I am planning using her words right back. "Too Bad"
