  • "Trackball with a scroll wheel?"

In all my years of life and gaming, (And the two are mutually inclusive... believe me.) I have never actually seen or been in contact with a trackball with a scroll wheel.

This is the one I currently have.
I have been using that shape of trackball for many years now. It was the first thing I got for my new computer. I recommended it to an old friend of mine, (Literally, an old friend. 83 years old, and learning to use a computer.) and he says it's the greatest thing he's ever used on a computer. He swears by it as much as I do now.

The only problem is, these days, a lot of programs have very widely used controls mapped to the scroll wheel on a mouse. Those controls occasionally happen to be the only ones not configurable. o.O' It's bewildering, really.

Does anyone happen to know offhandedly of any trackball model similar to that one that has a scroll wheel? (It should also have a wire. Who likes to change batteries?) I'm not sure if I can get used to any other sort of hand structure model.

I hope I'm not being an SC in my specificity. If you happen to know of a similar model, I would simply love you forever. If not, we're all happy, healthy, still have all our fingers and toes, and aren't spontaneously combusting. (Don't bother commenting; I'll start the Critic thread in the General discussion area.)

    Well, here's a cordless one. http://www.memoryexpress.com/Product...X3196(ME).aspx

Best I can find in a similar construction. If you don't mind the ball moving to a thumb position (seems unlikely from your description, but) here's http://www.memoryexpress.com/Product...25202(ME).aspx

    Here's one with a scroll ring http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-K72.../ref=pd_cp_e_1

That's all I can find at the moment. Mostly those are reference links, so you'll know models if any actually seem acceptable, and can try and find them through a supplier near you.

I've only seen ones like this. I found an image of one with what appears to be a scroll wheel to the side on this page though it doesn't say what model it is. Maybe you can look through Logitech trackballs and find that model.

I have that one, I think. I'll check the model of it during lunch.

I have a version of the Kensington one with the scroll wheel in my collection of input devices. It actually works quite well. The ball on the one I have is about the size and weight of a billiard ball. Very nice as you can use relatively large movements of your fingers to move around, or even move your whole hand. Good for people with shaky hands or limited dexterity.

I do appreciate the responses, very much. ^^, I did a preliminary Google Search, expecting the worst, and actually found those very same links.

My friend has the one with the ball on the left, with the same color and texture as the one in the first post. It was okay, but the problem is, *gasp* I'm a right handed person, using the trackball in the left hand. It's on the left side of the keyboard. It's what we're used to. I use a mouse in my right hand to the right of the keyboard, and a trackball to the left of the keyboard. It's the most bizarre thing. I can only imagine the horrors of using a trackball like that built for the right hand, in the left hand.

The one I quoted is a microsoft Trackball Optical. Product ID 52240-576

I only really keep it around anymore because it's the only one I have that's USB.

EDITED TO ADD: If you're interested it it, let me know. I'd love to replace it for a smaller (regular) USB mouse.

                EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use the exact same device, it's perfect, I ADORE it, and I desperately want a scroll wheel or equivalent.

Now I have places to look and things to try!

If you have the Logitech drivers installed, I believe they will allow you to use the trackball as a scroll wheel when one of the two auxiliary buttons are pressed (the tiny buttons above the main ones).

You have my attention. :-3 I actually have one that came with my PC. It is indeed a USB Mouse. Quite plain, but certainly quite functional. (I take care of my stuff. It's a nerd rule.) Has a scroll wheel too. We'll talk.

Ooh. Thanks for the tip. I saw a similar discussion / tutorial at an Ubuntu forum, but that was for Ubuntu. I'll have to go looking for a WinXP-related driver for such an event.

Heh, now I'm all giddy. That would solve it all.
