  • Yay for having a good day!

    Long nights

So I actually had a pretty nice day yesterday, thanks to 3 customers! I came in at 4:00 for my evening shift, mildly dreading the 6 hours ahead because I was sure that it would be another night where the manager is crazy and unrealistic, the customers are frustrating, the chore list is a million miles long AND my ride is late picking me up after close. I've had too many of those nights lately.

    Nice customer

25 minutes into my night, the manager asks me to remove some dead fish. As I grab a net and size up the loooong row of tanks, I mentally sigh and decide that tonight's gonna be a long, long night. There are literally 300 dead feeder fish, and probably another 30 dead tropical fish and goldfish up and down the row.

I begin recording UPCs and prices, then go through with the net and start yanking fish. Before I'm halfway done, a college guy walks up behind me with his friend trailing behind. He's short and friendly and smiles a lot. He looks my way and goes, "Yay, the grim reaper harvesting souls! Such a rare to behold sight!"

Yay, a person with a sense of humor! He seems obviously pleased when I return the smile and keep working. He tracks me down 30 minutes later to ask me some questions on iguana care. I show him which bulbs and fixtures he needs for UVB lighting, and he asks me questions about whether iguanas can metabolize animal protein. We have a very cool conversation about how awesome reptiles are. He praises me on how knowledgeable I am and thanks me a zillion times.

My spirits are lifted. Thank you, college guy.

Helping people makes me happy, too

Around 6:30, a woman calls, and I get paged to help her. I pick up the phone. It's a lady I've seen before and I recognize her voice. She calls me by name and asks me what nights I work this week so she can bring in her bunny and guinea pig to trim their nails and check out their dental situations.

I love working with animals, so even though we don't, as a store, offer this as a service, I give her an unofficial appointment for Monday night. I've seen these animals before and they're so spoiled and well-taken care of. Her children are really well-behaved and interested in everything. I love this lady.

Nothing like profanity and a Freudian slip to end the day

9:15 or so, I'm helping a 14-year old boy and his older sister with some fish. I ask the boy what he wants since he seems to be the one in charge. He responds, "I need a scum fucker, please!"

His sister stares at him. He stares at me like a deer in the headlights. "Scum.. SUCKER! Sucker!" he corrects himself, but alas, it's too late! Immediately, all three of us burst into hysterical giggles.

When I can speak again, I walk him over to the common plecos and catch one for him. "Here you go.. a scum sucker." They start giggling again. I can end the night smiling now, and only am a little sad that my only coworkers tonight are old ladies that I totally don't feel comfortable dropping the f-bomb around, so I'll have to wait til the next night to tell anyone at work about it.

Anyone else have an exceptionally cool night lately, despite everything?

I have a scum sucker (named Bubbles ). His new title is officially scum fucker. I think I'll even make a sign to put on his tank! That is just too hilarious!

Oh my **takes in breaths between laughter** god!!! I seriously have tears rolling down my face from laughing at this!! Thank you, Lindsey, and random 14 year old boy, for the much-needed laugh!
