  • Repent! The Snowpocalypse is upon us!

So, for those of us here on the CS.com boards who live on the East Coast of the U.S., we are well-aware that a big snowstorm is descending upon us. Strange white fallout will fall from the sky! Brother turning against brother! Dogs and cats, living together! Mass hysteria!

I don't understand what brought about the sudden Fimbulvinter around these parts (the Snowpocalypse which happens tomorrow is the 5th snowfall of the season-- the first was on Dec. 5th, the second was Dec. 19th, the third was last weekend, the fourth was this past Tuesday on the 2nd), but people are taking the forecasts to heart, at least. People were out in MASSIVE NUMBERS today. I have seriously never seen it as busy as it was at the wholesale club today outside of the holiday season.

My shift started at 4:45pm and ended around 11:15pm. We closed at 11pm (which is a topic for another post), and we were slammed pretty much until around 9:45pm. Lines at least four deep at every register at all times. And from what I heard from coworkers and managers, we were pretty much that busy all day.

I ended up on register 13, which we rarely use, for most of that shift. 13's main problem is the sensors on the conveyor belt don't work, so the belt never stops moving unless switched off manually. This just added another layer of irritation to what seemed like an interminable day.

Because the day was an hour longer than usual (due to our closing at 11pm instead of our usual 10pm), I was exhausted by the end of my shift. I clocked out as soon as I was able, got food at Mickey-D's, and got home and cracked open a beer. And I almost never drink.

Now if you'll excuse me, this beer is crying at me to finish it.

PLEASE send some of it down this way this time. All we ever get is boring old rain.

I must come clean. The snowpocalypse is my fault. You see I just moved to the Baltimore area from Connecticut last year. I've been in constant communication with my mother and we down here have gotten more snow than New England has this winter. It followed me. I don't know what higher power I pissed off for this to happen but I am truly sorry for all the people hurt by my snowy punishment. Know that I am getting mine as well. I work at a grocery store.

Man I hope we get nailed hard. I love the snow. This year the southern part of the north east is hogging it all. It's bad enough that the weather always seems to avoid where I live.

At work yesterday my boss's wife called. She went to the grocery store (she needed to do her shopping). Wasn't an open space, out of milk, eggs, and bread.

I love a proper winter myself. Helsinki has had an unusual amount of snow this year, and nearly all of it has been of the powdery type that's ideal for skiing in.

The same type of snow sticks to trains in awkward places. The railways here have had to use reduced timetables for two complete weeks, one because an accident closed several platforms at the main station, and last week because they couldn't keep up with the vehicle de-icing.

Trust me. You don't want this. It's a nightmare out there. Although I will move to Missouri temporarily if I can leave the snow with you. I hates it so.

I saw pictures on the web of what seemed like thousands of people in a local supermarket and decimated dairy and bread aisles.

Umm, no. Georgia isn't properly equipped to handle what they've been getting farther north. I slogged through Chicago winters for nine years in a properly equipped city and it sucked then! I can't imagine what a place like Atlanta, or small town like Tifton or itty-bitty Dupont would be like in that mess.

Be GLAD of the rain, because it's reversing the effects of that godawful drought from a few years back!

As much as I'd like to let you take all the credit for the weather, I'm afraid it's actually my and my husband's fault. Not just the current weather, but global warming entirely.

See, around 1998 we got tired of saying 'wouldn't it be great to have a telescope?' because of the wonderful clear nights we always got. So we bought a small telescope, and not a good one either (we were noobs, we didn't have a clue what we were doing). The skies started to be just slightly less than great after that, but still lots of good nights as we learned about astronomy and scopes and all that good stuff. We really didn't notice the subtle decline of the weather at that point.

Then we bought a slightly larger scope (4.5" EQ), and our percentage of clear nights dropped to less than 50/year.

We still hadn't clued in, so we went out and bought an 8" Dob, and for those of you who know 'scopes, this isn't HUGE but it's not small either as portable scopes go. The views through it are AMAZING.

That was 4 years ago. We've used it less than 10 times. See, we haven't had a single clear night since, unless the temperature is at least -15C and neither of us is all that eager to spend lots of time out in the bitter cold anymore.

We have angered the sky gods and we don't know what to do to regain their favour. Sorry, folks.

I thought it was my fault. I moved from Indiana and had been hoping to get some snow this season. Apparently it hadn't snowed where I live in VA in years. >.> <.< I think the snow goddess was listening.

Two feet of snow. That's how much we got in my neighborhood. I woke up on Saturday, saw how deep the snow was, and the lack of plowing, went "Nope," and went upstairs, called work and said I wasn't coming in.

Went outside later with Dad to clear the front walk and porch, and about two-thirds of the driveway, but after clearing half the snow off of my car, went, "Fuck this, it's beer o'clock."

This morning, much the same. Saw the lack of plowing, went "Nope," called work and said I wasn't coming in, and went back to bed. Went outside later, and thankfully our neighbor with the snowblower cleared us a path from the driveway to the "beaten path" in the street. Then it was just a matter of clearing the rest of the snow off my car, cleaning up the driveway, et voila, now we have access to the outside world again.

I know it. That's why I only asked for *some* of the snow. Six inches would be great, and probably more than we've had the last ten years combined.
