  • New/Old Game

My Aussie got me a gift cert for gog.com and within that cert was a free download of Fallout2. Got everything downloaded nicely but I'm having problems and thought I should ask here first cause all you techies rock.

First of all the sound was wonky, but I was able to figure that out myself.

Second is the picture I'm getting just horrible and it makes it really hard to play.

See? Really hard to play when thats what your looking at. I used to remember much nicer graphics then that when it first came out...what over 10 years ago?

have you tried running in compatibility mode for the os of the time. it was written for win 95, may not run on vista at all though. also may have to tweak the config settings for the game, per the techheads at gamespot forums setting the desktop color config to 16bit should help, may have to alt + tab a few times to clear it up. one other option is this. but make a backup of your game and saves before trying any of the fixes

Okay new problem then, according to the link you gave Steele,

      Black screens/psychedelic colour schemes.
Both problems can happen without sfall, (especially on vista/win7,) but sfall can make them happen on occasion when they wouldn't otherwise. To fix it, in the [Graphics] section of ddraw.ini change Mode to 4 or 5.
      I have no ddraw.ini

Alt + tab does not work.

I went to the gog.com forums and they say the same thing, fix the ddraw.ini file. So...I'm screwed eh?

If you don't have ddraw.ini then you need to install sfall one would assume.

You may also want to look at a program called DOSbox. It works very well for the older games. I run X-Com and the old Ultimas with it on Vista.

sfall is a player made mod, so I don't know.

See this is why I wish I had my Win 98 desktop at this house rather then at Mom's. Wouldn't be having this problem then.

              GK, even 64x?

actually dosbox might do it, what it does is make a 16bit virtual machine environment that you could run it from. should work with x64 environment and would open up a world of old games from our youths

Sfall is more an engine tweak than a mod, it doesn't add stuff in game items or anything.

Looks to me like you've got a palette mismatch. Have you tried setting your desktop to 256 colours? If you've got it set to either 64k or 4M colours, you aren't using a palette, and the game might be feeding what it thinks is a palette entry but that the OS thinks is an actual colour.
