  • After 5 years...

and 9 months, I am no longer a deli employee of the grocery store.

I no longer have to deal with rude customers.

I no longer have to deal with managers thinking it's okay to sell old meat.

I no longer have to deal with store managers cutting our hours back under what the union says is legal and trying to get away with it.

I no longer have to deal with people stealing my fucking lunch. (Happened last night again. They left me a few spoon fulls of rice and 4 pieces of seseame chicken. Thanks guys!)

I put up with a lot there, because in this economy there aren't many places where you can get a job with decent pay, benefits (well, benefits is an exaggeration, considering they paid a whole $20 of my urgent care visit and now I owe the hospital $353) But this last week, they broke the straw.

With them cutting and cutting hours, and now looking to cut the legal minimum amount of hours, AND our pay next month, I NEED a second job. I had been looking off and on over the past year for one that wouldn't interfere with the deli. But in this economy and in my location, every place that was hiring wanted nights, which is what I worked in the deli. My manager refused to work me days (even though people with lower seniority then me got days every week)

Last monday I had an interview at a job. With their hours, I could close, but wouldn't be available until 6pm mon-fri. Our store is open until 11 and, even though the deli closes at 9, other departments (such as the cashiers) greatly need help around 9ish. Every night there seems to be a huge rush of customers that lasts until 10, sometimes right up until the store closes. Well, I told my deli manager the hours of the job, and she said "Oh, we can probably work something around that. I know you really want this job and I want you to get it!"

Wednesday morning the job called me back, and offered the position to me. I was estatic, and went into work and told my deli manager. Who suddenly had to leave (she usually stays and chit chats for about a half hour after her shift.) as soon as I gave the news and wouldn't talk to me about it.

Thursday the store manager comes to me and tells me that he refuses to work with the schedule. Even though my position is part time, and the store has always worked around people's other jobs, school, etc, I HAD to be there by 4pm every day "Otherwise you need to choose which job you want more." Even after telling him I'll cashier, push carts, clean bathrooms, work overnights, whatever he needed, he said no, and unless I could tell my other job to push my hours back, I had to choose.

So I told him I'd be handing my official, typed two week notice Friday.

After months of abuse from this asshole, I get to completely screw him over. The company is on a hiring freeze. And with how this man manages the store, people have been quitting left and right. As of right now he barely has enough people in each department to cover the department. Many days there's one, ONE person working grocery at a time. And they have them back up cashiering about 80% of their shift because there's not enough cashiers. It's like that in every department in the store too.

The deli is in dire straights and barely holding it's head above the water. Now he just lost someone who knows how to do pretty much everything in the department, and has been a loyal employee for almost 6 years. We're beyond short handed, because one gal is on maternity leave and he never gave us anyone to replace her. She's not due back for at least another month, possibly more. (She's very much enjoying staying home with the babe.)

Is it bad that I feel soo good about that?

I start my new job as a kennel assistant tomorrow. No customers, just cats and dogs! I'll take getting dirty and a possibility of being scratched or bitten over abusive managers any day.

I still can't believe I'm finally out of that horrible place!

Theft of lunch is theft and if you could find out who was doing it you could have them arrested.

As for handing in your two weeks at a place that is being mismanaged so badly...good job.

If I worked at a place like that...I wouldn't work there after finding that out.

I posted a thread on that a couple years ago Becks. I actually got that manager forced into retirement.

Aethian, The store manager actually is looking into reviewing the tapes of the break room to find out who did it, and they're getting fired if he finds out. He's sick of people's food being eaten.

Working with animals is soooo much better then this crap. At least when they eat your food they look guilty and give you sad eyes and a tail wag.

Yeah, the puppies and kitties are sweet (most of the time), but sometimes the owners suck.

Seriously, good luck. I'd LOVE to work with puppies and kitties all day. Nothing makes a bad day better like puppy kisses and kitty head-bonks.
I am no longer of capable of the emotion you humans call “compassion”. Though I can feign it in exchange for an hourly wage. (Gravekeeper)

I spent 2.5 years working in an animal hospital. It was an extremely satisfying job!

See, this is the great thing about my job. I don't deal with customers. AT ALL.

Got to learn how to clip nails yesterday. I suck at it. I'm so paranoid that I'm going to cut too close and make them bleed. It takes me like 5 minutes a nail. I wish this job was full time. I have to try to find another job to work around this one eventually. Blah.

And of course, it's everyone else's fault, never his. How the incompetent, lazy and abusive manage to keep their jobs when there are probably scores of better-qualified, more competent people willing to take their place is beyond me.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.
