47-year-old woman attempts to feed black bear at zoo, loses four fingers in the process.

Why yes, this happened in my neck of the woods. Why do you ask?

*blinks* Almost as bad as when I got yelled at the Sydney Aquarium when I stopped a little kid from 'feeding' the croc.

      "Alcohol was a factor"...

      but of course...

Weiler and Bosworth will have to pay for the vaccines, but if the animals were put down they would have had to pay for euthanizing the bears and sending their heads to the state laboratory for testing as well as for replacing the bears.
      Guess they lucked out, then...

Tag her as a potential 'Honorable Mention' in the Darwins.

Likely won't fit all the criteria (due to having produced progeny) but DAMN, how stupid can someone be?

(Yes I know, if people were not stupid, websites like this would have one-millionth of the posts in the relevant section, but still.)

It's actually been changed to "At-Risk Survivor". And yeah, she won't get a full Darwin, but that's because she survived, not because she reproduced already.

Dumb, dumb, DUMB!!! What is with these morons who can't figure out that wild animals are just that: WILD! These are not cuddly, funny, animated Disney creatures. These are real animals that weigh as much as a truck, have claws as long as your fingers and sharp as daggers, huge fangs and are very territorial! You Do Not Mess With Them.

I read the book Death In Yellowstone and there are many similar (and worse) stories in there. Idiots who ignore warning signs and verbal warnings from rangers and decide to play with the bears and bison, then end up in pieces. What will it take to get people to respect wild creatures and keep their distance from them?!

and to boot they will most likely have to kill the bear (who really had nothing to do with this) just so they can test its brain for rabies AND these two will most like sue the zoo/city and actually get money.

Racket_Man, according to the article, these losers both agreed to take the series of rabies vaccines, so fortunately, the bear shouldn't have to be put down.

In my mind, in a situation such as this, of somebody disobeying clear signage, and ignoring common sense, euthanizing the animal should be totally out of the question.

If you're enough of an idiot to pull such a stunt, get the shots, or suffer the possible consequences.

This whole story reminds me of this one. And I agree with your suggestion.

Having worked at a zoo, I can easily see how this could happen. I have never seen the level of idiocy I witnessed while working at the zoo anywhere else. So you know that is saying something. Seriously, stupidest people, no contest.

People think the whole planet is freaking Disney World.

I have, and as God is my witness, seen some asshead dangling his toddler into the tiger pit. I shit you not.

I have seen some teenager just about lose a finger when a Leadbeaters Cockatoo bit him. This after me and another woman said to him "do not put your fingers into that enclosure that bird is vicious and can take your finger off. He kills squirrels by crushing their heads." The kid bled all over the sign that said "keep fingers out of enclosure. Bird bites."

                      I wish I were joking.

The other day store manager came into the backroom with a box of Bugles (those horn-shaped corn snacks) while we were unloading the truck and told us that was what these two MENSA members were trying to feed to the bears.

Ergo, a new idea in cross merchandising! Bugles on an endstand someplace, and the next endstand over has first aid supplies!

Also, I have come up with a new term for the not-so-bright people I come across: Bear feeders.

No instead, they should be euthanized because they are too stupid to continue.
