  • Gulf of Mexico oil spill

(I did a search before posting...)

So, some of you might have heard about the oil spill in the Gulf. I live in FL, near the AL state line. Needless to say, us Gulf Coast residents are not happy about the oil that's drifting towards our coastline. The local Navy base has become a staging point for the USCG and a command center is going to open nearby in Mobile, AL.

It's just awful. I hope it doesn't hit the coastline.

Don't know if anyone else still is experiencing this oil disaster; just decided to update my old post with this update.

Well, over night our beaches were fully ruined.

Miles and miles of white sand ruined. Today a dolphin died after dozens of people tried to save it.

I'm just sick. I mean, I've lived here fourteen years now and practically lived on the beaches some days and it makes me sick seeing our area's lifeblood ruined right before my eyes.

Oh trust me Im pissed about it too. I can't believe that they had NO contingency plan to deal with something like this? Someone really needs to be fired badly.

I think we all know who it is and who needs to get their ass kicked for this disaster *Cough cough Tony Hayward* . I hate hearing about all these people whose livelihoods depend on the gulf are still suffering because people are dragging their feet and have yet to come up with and utilize an effective way to clean up and stop the spill.

And on the news just today, a mini-submarine broke something underwater, so the oil is now gushing like it did before the "fix."

Just found out on the news that thick pools of oil are washing up on the beaches of the Florida panhandle.

Yes, I went to the beach this morning just to see and it's plain awful. I don't like it at all! People were there crying; heck, I was nearly moved to tears. I was going to go to the beach for the 4th of July fireworks, but now they don't even know if they can do it this year.

This is not my picture, but it was on the paper's website today:

              http://www.pnj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/sec...6240322&Ref=AR

Makes me sick, really. Locals are all in an uproar, board meetings are always full, local government officials are ticked off...It's getting bad, bad, bad!

Well, hell...now it's going to get worse...a tropical depression has just formed and will probably move into the Gulf as a tropical storm. Dammit!

                twitch.....ok....
this enfuriates me... ppl gripe about it but who is out helping clean up (not a gripe to posters)
instead of making sure other working rigs meet safety inspection president wants them shut down. thats why this happened, deep water horizon (i keep getting the name wrong) did NOT meet safety requirements the survivors who did speak up said this...anyone who could make a major difference listened, only panicked. i apologize for ranting yet this is what i see every day the ppl in charge going oh sh*t oh sh*t and news reporting it. i ought to start gathering a media collage as a reminder to future generations to not have this happen again....i hold my tongue on the rest

For a few hours yesterday morning it was being reported on a local radio station and local newspaper sites that tarballs were found on the beach (allegedly being tested now - we know they'll say it's not from DWH / BP).

                  In Fort Lauderdale.

Oddly, these stories disappeared by mid morning.

Plus we have tropical storm Alex - about 1/2 the tracks show him going right though the spill.

My main gripe about this is the sh*t for brains Americans (not directed at anyone here, just some idiots on another forum) who seem to think that BP stands for British People and are using it as an excuse to start bashing the UK. Oh sure, cuz we deliberately paid BP (that's British PETROLEUM) to dump that oil in your waters. BP does NOT represent the British people, we are all just as horrified as you are on the damage done.

I don't hear a lot of people where I live blaming the Brits. You'll always have your crazy people, but the majority of our anger is directed towards BP the company. Besides, we are a tourist industry and a lot of tourists come from the UK and other parts of Europe, so why would we want to make you mad?

There are BP workers on our beaches right now and when I was there, people were thanking them for working. Granted, a lot of the workers are local area, I do believe.

People protest at BP stations, but we all know (most anyway) that the owners hold no blame.

The people bashing the UK over this are ones that don't even live any where near the coast, it seems.

On top of that, they're just looking for an easy scapegoat. Along with having the freedom here to be stoopid.
