  • Mega Man: The Movie

    http://www.eddielebron.com/filmography/megaman/

It comes out on May 7th. It's online. It's fan-made. And it looks fucking beautiful. Hollywood, you are hereby ordered to immediately cease and desist attempting to make video game movies. Leave it to the ones who know how to do it right - the fans.

Yeah, I know this kind of thing has been done before with projects like Resident Hazard, but the trailer alone is simply fantastic. And, unlike the others, it's free which is really kind of awesome on the part of the filmmakers considering the level of quality the preview hints at. Not great, but certainly a strong effort. And that's a hell of a lot more than the "legitimate" filmmakers can say. I hope it's every bit as good as the trailer promises. And I hope he doesn't get sued into oblivion by Capcom if it achieves phenomenal success.

I don't think Capcom will make too much of a fuss. They haven't yet shot down the guy who's been pitching a live-action Devil May Cry movie since a while back.

I'm surprised my husband had not heard about this yet, he is a huge Mega Man fan...well, so am I, but he keeps up on video game news more than I do. Anyway, it does look fantastic! Kinda glad we didn't hear about it till just now so we don't have long to wait till it's released!

Decent series. Worst. Theme song. Ever.

              It's here.

The release was delayed until noon and it's 93 minutes long, so I'll have to wait until after work tonight to see it. Watched the first 10 mins or so, and it looks really well done.

Zero budget. Damned fine watch considering that. Plenty of room for sequels.

                Thumbs up!

I read somewhere that he did it with a few thousand dollars that he was able to raise. They want to make a sequel, estimated at around $15,000. Not much by film-making standards. Hell, with a million-dollar budget he probably could have made a commercial blockbuster.

I've certainly seen a hell of a lot worse in movies that cost 10 times that amount. The difference is that this movie has heart. A basic requirement of video game based movies should be that the developers at least care about and respect the source material. Not just make a vaguely-almost-kind-of-similar movie and slap a franchise name on it. This film is also further proof that Uwe Boll should be launched into the sun.

Overall, the CG effects were kind of clunky at times, the fight scenes could have been longer, and some of the performances could have been a little less stiff (particularly Dr Light), but these are just nit-picking. I had a smile on my face from start to finish. It wasn't perfect by any means, but they weren't trying for perfection. They wanted to take a beloved game from our childhoods and make an enjoyable movie for the part of us that still look back on it fondly. In that respect they succeeded 100%.

What more can I say? I think it was the best depiction of Megaman that I've seen. Especially in how they conveyed that he wasn't fighting for the thrill of battle but because he felt like it was just something he was obligated to do for the sake of humanity. Certainly better than the Captain N version, the animated series version (he was just too damned plucky), and leagues better than in Megaman 8 where he was voiced by a 4-year old girl. The robot masters were fun to watch, the easter eggs and fanservice moments were delightful, Roll was just adorable, and I could watch Dr Wily chew up scenes all day long. He was just so over-the-top and entertaining ("Vat in ze blue hell?"). They couldn't have gotten a bigger ham short of hiring Bruce Campbell for the part (and yes, that's a compliment). The music was good, but it would have been nice to have more songs (at least an orchestral remix of the boss battle music). Easily the best film adaptation of a video game ever made.

Eddie Lebron, I salute you. Well done, sir. I wish you all the success in the world with your future projects, whatever they may be.

There's plenty of proof that you do not need a lot of money to make a good film.

One of the highest grossing film (as a % of the cost) so far was funded by a credit card and by "hustling some money they were owed".

                    The movie?

                    Clerks.

(I think the highest % film was Blair Witch - making about $12,000 per $1 spent on the film - Clerks was only about $120 - to give a perspective - Avatar was only about $4 made for every $1 spent).

(I think those numbers are just based on theatre ticket sales)

Also, Reservoir Dogs. Once Keitel got involved, they got a bit of studio money, but the actors provided most of their own costumes, etc. And I far prefer it to Pulp Fiction.

                        Same with Thirteen.

A lot of the costumes were the girls own clothing. They raised about $2 million total for the film, which for a film in that category, is considered to be low-budget.
Napoleon Dynamite is another one. ($400,000)
Paranormal Activity falls into the "micro-budget" category. ($15,000)
