  • Loving the schedules now...

Up until a few months ago, I only worked closing shifts. Period. I never went in before 2pm, never after 3:30pm. I liked being able to sleep in until 1 or 2 pm, but I hated not being able to even grab a bite at a decent place when I got off work.

First I asked management to start giving me some lunch shifts. Then a couple of weeks ago "hey dood can you toss me some opens?". Cue some very slack jaws, as if the planet had just stopped spinning.

Next week's schedule. 2 opens, 2 early lunch shifts, 1 early close (2pm). Scheduling manager (asst dept manager) was counting my deposit at the end of my shift tonight and asked me how I liked the new schedule. I told her I loved it, and she said she's noticed a huge change in my personality since getting off of all closes - stated I seem a lot happier and have a lot more energy. And said I would bring the median age of the openers down significantly, lol. Our 2 main opening cashiers are both in their 60s, I'm in my early 30s.

The one close I did have this week, I wound up trading with another cashier, but at the other cashier's request. She wanted a late shift today so she could go out to a concert last night, followed by a party.. I wanted the early shift so I could have time to actually do stuff before the sun went down. Win/Win!

I never dreamed I would ever be a morning person (well, I AM posting this at 1am....).

I'm a night owl and have a terrible time getting up in the morning. Yet I love morning shifts because I have to get up and get my butt in gear. Then I still have the evenings free.

You're not a morning person until your day starts at 12:30am. :P

ive been a closer for 7 years. i love it, i like sleeping in, and im more of a night person. also, up until last december i was in school, so i kinda had to be a night worker.

based on how much i get screwed with not enough help on at nights, ive thought about maybe doing some opening shifts. but then im sure theyd find a way to screw me then. id have to be in by 630 (gasp!) and its about a 20 min drive, blah blah get up real early.

i dont think i'll ever have a "normal" schedule

At one point it started at 12am. Grocery stocker, overnight, same store. Then they moved me up to 4am.

Yeah I really do like sleeping in, but getting home while the sun is still out is awesome now. Today I had to be at work at 9, I slept in until 8:45 and walked out the door at 8:52, and clocked in at exactly 9 (1.8 mile drive each way, 45 mph speed limit the whole way, and a couple of lights). We won't discuss my lack of shower this morning...

Tomorrow I get to sleep in a bit - I don't have to be there until 10:30!

Oh yeah, once again, the SAME cashier who wanted to trade with me last week... traded her shift with me for tomorrow. Tomorrow I was supposed to do 3-close, but now it's 10:30-6:30. Once again, it's because she wants to go out and party. Hey, it's her liver, and she's generally reliable, and I was really dreading the closing shift.

I used to not want to do anything before 3 pm, I hated getting up early in the morning. Since I started working early mornings several years ago, I love doing things in the morning now. I also consider anything past 6 am to be sleeping in on some days.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

I told my boss I don't want 3rds shift anymore because I can't sleep but that isn't possible as she not "allowed" to hire anyone new and nobody else wants to fill in for the full time person. SO now this week. I work every possible hour in the day,

2 morning shifts, a 2nd shift, and then 2 overnights. I currently need to wake up in an hour. and i have only slept for an hour.
