  • Fired for stopping a shoplifter at Walfart

To me it doesn't sound like she agressively tried to stop him.

She didn't try to stop him - she asked to see a receipt so she could take the censor off.

Then, he attacked her and his misdermeanor became a felony (theft to robbery).

Then why does Wal-Mart have people at the door who will ask to see your receipt if you have a large, unbagged item in your cart?

      I just don't understand.

Wal-Mart, IMHO, shouldn't have fired her, they should just make the door checker at the exit obsolete.

I would not have lasted long at Walmart, I've shouted: Stop thief!, I've chased after someone with a broom, "escorted" someone to the front desk, even said really loud: You can't put that in the baby stroller! (raw meat item) That last one was mostly for health reasons.

I thought it was standard practice to ask to see the receipt and offer to deactivate any sensors when someone sets off the alarm on the way out. She didn't say anything to him until after the alarm went off. How is that the same as chasing down a shoplifter? Sounds like she spoke to him like any other customer who happens to set off the alarm for innocent reasons.

The one line that got my attention was "...and then he finally gave up and just let go of the computer." That makes it sound like she had a hold of the computer, and that was why he was attacking her. If that's the case, then she was putting herself, and possibly others, in danger.

As for the policy thing, most places have a policy for robbery and shoplifting that says the first thing you do is make sure nobody gets hurt. I know my employee policy says that. You know, the one that I was given the day I started the job, that I had to sign off on to say I had read the whole thing.

I'm not without sympathy. I'm sorry she got hurt, but a $600 computer isn't worth a trip to the hospital. (I know her injuries weren't bad enough to warrant a trip to the hospital, but they easily could have been.)

Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

If she was never told of the policy that's a problem... Stores unfortunately have to forbid employees from actively stopping shoplifters (like by grabbing what they're trying to steal), because otherwise they could get in trouble for encouraging employees to do so.

if she potioned herself right or when he attacked her moved himself a certain way she may have never touched him except to touch the sensor on the box.

What I want to know is what security was doing the whole time. There wasn't any mention of them in the article, which makes me think that yes, they do nothing more than sit in the parking lot with their fingers in their noses. That girl shouldn't have been fired, she should've been promoted.

Or maybe they couldn't justify chasing and apprehending the suspect. There are certain things they have to see/witness, and they have to watch the suspect the entire time from selection of the item to concealment to exit before they can pursue somebody.

Or maybe there wasn't even anybody working LP at the time. I know it ain't too often there's an LP person at the swamp.

In any case, the situation sucks, but rules are rules. If she had been at that store for almost two years, I can't imagine they didn't let her know about the policy against chasing shoplifters at some point. That's a very big liability risk the store would be opening itself up to if they weren't telling people about it.
