  • Survey shows more people quitting than getting fired

    http://finance.yahoo.com/career-work...rklife_balance

The article attributes this to the job market being stronger and there being more opportunities, hence it's now easier to quit and find a better job.

Personally, I don't know. I've heard a lot of anecdotal evidence of companies making as hard as possible for employees (reduced hours, crappier shift times, undesirable job tasks) to try and pressure them into quitting so they don't have to pay out unemployment.

I'd guess a lot more people are quitting because they are burning out. Companies are putting more pressure on the employees they have. I've noticed here that more people are becoming burnt out, I am too. It's hard to be expected to work harder, for ridiculous hours and not for the money you deserve. I think a lot of companies are thinking like my boss is. She thinks that since we need money she can do what ever she pleases, demand more work from us and continue to cut our wages. Thing is once the job market picks up these businesses are going to find out the hard way that people aren't going to stick around. My boss will find that out soon too.

I would place my bets that more people are quitting because they cannot tolerate their jobs anymore and are about to go insane or hurt somebody if they don't quit.

Business is going up, but staffing isn't always necessarily. Where I work, we are expected to do twice, three, four times what we were expected to do a year ago, with the same amount of people or just a little more here and there. It's like that at a lot of places. Perks are being taken away one by one by one, to cut costs, but that doesn't mean that the workload is lightening.

I must agree with Squeaks, that once things do get better and steady again, many companies who have been pulling stunts (especially the worst kinds) are going to be losing the most workers.

A lot of people are sticking around with the job they have mostly because of the bad job market and shaky economy but also because of those two factors they feel as if they have little to no options depending on whatever circumstances they are going through (i.e. expecting a child, school, etc.). I bet once the job market starts to perk up a bit you'll see people quitting the jobs they are forced to tolerate /hate because they'll have more options open for them.

I read about the shootings at the Toledo Jeep plant that culminated from these very things that are going on in the workplace today. The workers there say that they hear that corporate has terms for these very things: "Continuous Improvement" and "Lean Production". I think that most of you can figure out exactly what they mean in terms of the workers. The workers have their own name for these policies: "Management By Stress". I've heard that top CEO's are breathing fire down management's back to cut labor costs as much as possible and increase productivity at literally ANY cost for the workers.
