  • scam alert for bankerrs

*disclaimer, this is really in the gray area on my confidentiality agreement... so I want to give a heads up, but obviously can't go too much into details.

For those of you working in the banking industry, a warning on a new scam in the relay system. If you receive a call from someone claiming to have to pay an employee by transferring money from their account to their "employee's" account... well other than the usual level of caution you'd want to use, be aware, many of those calls have had IP addresses that trace to out of country.

I've always treated relay calls with a bit of caution to begin with, especially if it's a relay company I haven't heard of.

If it's AT&T or one of the big carriers, my guard drops a bit, I've never had something scammy come through them. But the IP stuff was 99% scam.

slight nitpick, IP refers to the connection type, not the company type. Sprint and AT&T are IP based now. For that matter, they aren't even really major relay companies... they would rather do it themselves rather than forward their access fees to the FCC to fund actual relay companies (yeah, you can those of us in the industry don't really like them )

i wonder if you can set up your router with an APC to block specific countries from connecting to you?

would that work for your phones?

though it might not be allowed... in case you have valid customers in those countries

I wonder why we don't do that... after all, we aren't supposed to be providing service anywhere except in the United States and Peurto Rico... so I don't know why we don't just block IP addresses from out of country

Its relatively easy to spoof an IP address using a proxy. Most people can't be arsed to do this though, and so just by blocking all foreign IP's it would cut down on nearly all out of country calls.

One gray area though. What about US military bases or embassies? They're still considered American soil, even though they can be halfway across the planet.

I am not an expert, but I'm pretty sure they come through as IP addresses distinct to American Military bases and Embassies...
To be honest, it's never come up... all of our legit callers have been in the continental US (I've never even seen a Hawaiin come through on my line)

Just curious, but how do you hook up a DeWalt model 625 to a Green Dragon, and what does either of them have to do with relay calls?
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

Only on official military communications and lines. If the person is in the barracks or in military family housing, at least when the wife was in Sicily, the internet access was provided by a local company... The wife and I had an Italian IP address for 4 years. I got tired of looking at Italian ads on an American website.
