  • Odd ways for customers to show their appreciation.

Not an SC - thank you presents aren't (normally*) sucky.

My coworker has just received a present from a greatful customer.

Some bath cream and..... a pack of 4 toilet rolls.

He does work largely with customers who have mental health problems. Plus it's not a gift that's going to go to waste.

*I think I've posted before about the exception. A female coworker was given a personal shaver by a very creepy customer. A gift that fails on almost infinite "I saw this and thought of you" levels. Other than that they are generally appreciated for the thought, even where the item isn't really wanted.

You have to admit, the toilet paper is practical!

Is it the good stuff, or the sandpaper?

        Well, it's not brand name.

My coworker took it home last night, and was saying he didn't know what his wife would make of it.

I guess I could ask him if it sandpaper-like. But I'd feel kind of awkward...

My father runs his own auto shop. Around x-mas he will get between 30-40 bottles of random liquor from his customers. My father quit drinking hard stuff and he has a teenage son at home. So I get 30-40 bottles of liquor for x-mas. :-)

Actually, in a certain sense it does to go waste...

            Damn my tangential mind.

              At least you're not alone.

I also hope it's not the John Wayne TP. Rough, tough, and don't take no shit from no one!

We have had customers show their appreciation by bringing a box of donuts or cans of soda, even once I had a customer insist I take the 5 dollar tip. . .as he claimed it was cause he was <insert race here> and it was not right if he didn't.

But toilet paper is a new one

                    Can't really argue with that.

I'll rephrase. It's a gift pretty much everyone will use.

What we like best is when we get food. We aren't allowed to take gifts as individuals but we can take gifts as an organisation. A nice box of chocolates is generally appreciated. Cakes. Mmm.

People very occassionally get bottles of wine etc. which are meant to be saved for next time we have a celebration with all of us there.

Other things pretty much go to waste. I've got some odd little ornaments on the shelf over my desk, I think someone got from a second hand shop. I can't take them home (and don't want to) and I don't really need knick knacks at work.

Flowers just sit around the office until they die.

Other things are just...odd. Sarah (who got the personal shaver) also had someone who kept buying her random second hand clothes. She was also working on the mental health project at the time.

My favourite though is a little wooden plaque. Its not something I'd have bought, but the customer brought it all the way from Sri Lanka for me. She said I had to let it remind me to go one day and see a big festival they have there, and I was just really touched that she'd been thinking about me while she wasn't even in the country. I got special permission to take it when I changed offices.

All we'd really like is just people to say "thank you" sometimes, and tell us when things go well.

Obviously your coworker is the only one who gives a shit.

We're not allowed to take gifts of any kind, as we could get fired for it as management can view that as "stealing". We have to tell customers, who want to buy us even a small piece of chocolate, that we can't accept anything and keep it that way.

Would love to be able to accept something when customers show their appreciation other then telling management that we went beyond what we normally do.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

I got a christmas card once. No it didn't have anything in it, it was just really nice to think that customer didn't see me as a "supermarket servant".

mom use to put a nice bottle of wine in the mail box and address it to "Mrs. Marty" - the mailman's wife. She figured people always gave him booze so his wife should have something she can enjoy too.

as for TP... digital media class the teacher often spoke about real world issues. he asked the class - that if it comes down to any giant cataclysm what should you have a giant stock of?

his answer - toilet paper. cos if the market crashed and money was useless, TP could take its place

(of course i'm a violent little pepper and answered "shotguns" )

I'm really glad we don't have the same attitude - it's really rude to refuse a gift ! You just hurt people's feelinsg.

I've refused money (which we can take for the orgnaisation, we're a charity, or can use to buy tea and biscuits for staff) where I thought someone really shouldn't be giving it.

Otherwise I think refusing hurts the people offering more than us.
