  • Hit & Run - I think I did a good thing

I wasn't sure if this should go in sightings or roadkill because it was a parking lot - not actually on the roads. I'm sorry if it is in the wrong place.

A little background: I have recently acquired another part-time job at the local community college where I also attend classes. It is in our computer lab doing various different things - 4 hours a day mon-thurs & 5 hours on Friday. (still working part-time at a truck stop on the weekends as well) it's WONDERFUL and I love it.

Anyway, today I was leaving after my 4 hour shift & upon getting to my car I realized I left my keys inside on the desk & had to go back in. While I was walking back in I walked beside a large custom van & I noticed it because a window behind the driver door was busted out & I could see a lot of trash inside it. I get my keys & head back out down the stairs to the parking lot & I hear loud crunching sounds. I knew immediately it was coming from the area around the van & at first I wondered if somebody had tried to get inside it, but quickly realized the van was moving a bit. A little more crunching & the van stops. I get to my car, which is behind the van in another row, and realize this person has hit the car parked next to it - a younger female gets out & as I'm watching (while pretending not to) puts something on the car & just having that *feeling* I write the plate number down (habit from working in so many gas stations) & just as my feeling predicted - the van leaves.

It crossed my mind at this point that maybe I should mind my own business - that is what most people do nowadays. Plus, I'm in a fairly urban city & the person did appear to leave something on the car - so I fully admit I did think the thoughts, but no way could I mind my own business. If it was my car I'd want somebody to say something - so I pulled out & drove around to the front of the hit vehicle & was shocked at the amount of damage to it. If it had been a slight scratch, a paint swap - it would have been one thing, but this car was badly damaged.

I ended up going to the police office within the college - reporting it - taking officers to the car, wrote up a witness statement & both the officer & I took a couple pictures. The person did leave some contact information on the note that was left that was getting smeared quickly because it had started raining & I am happy that they at least did that, but it bothered me a lot that after seeing the amount of damage they did - they still left anyway & didn't report it themselves.

I think you did the right thing. Scratch or totaled car, it's still hit and run. Just tossing a note and running doesn't cut it, because like you mentioned, rain or other elements may destroy the note and now the owner has no means of finding the person who damaged their car.

You definitely did the right thing when, as you noted, many people would have just kept walking.

yes you did the right thing

this way, instead of just a crummy note, the other driver will have a chance to get the damage to his or her car take care of by the person responsible for hitting it.

cos if the note was already being eaten by the rain... the van driver may not have done much about it, and by the time the other driver got to the car... it may have been too late to get any valid information from the note

You're awesome! I hope someone like you is around if someone tries to pull that crap with MY car.

Given that the accident occured on a college campus, the van driver ethically, if not legally, should have reported the matter to campus police herself. Leaving a note might satisfy the letter of the law, but not the spirit.

The van driver might not have broken the law, but you definitely did the right thing.

and campus police - at least the ones at my campus - usually go and find the driver of the damaged vehicle to let them know

the campus police did use the tag to track down the owner & I did see the poor lady later walking towards the building with the police office, but I didn't talk to her at all. I figured I did what I felt was the absolute right thing & reported it to the campus police & gave a witness statement in case there is trouble later with getting her car fixed.
The officer said that the van driver would most likely NOT get charged because they left the insurance information, but I agree she should have reported what she did herself.

Ha! I'd bet that the insurance info isn't valid, or it's an expired policy.
                    And that's a sucker bet.
