George Steinbrenner Put the Bombast Into Bronx Bomber -- MLB FanHouse

*link failed* I'm working on getting a link to work. If someone else wants to do it, I'd appreciate it.

Yes. Nothing sadder than when a loud, obnoxious bully who lived into his 80s with a few hundred millions dollars dies.

        Over $1 billion actually.

And yes, it is sad as hell when the patriarch of the greatest baseball team ever dies.

Their old announcer died on Sunday, too (according to the article I posted). He was 99, and was the announcer from 1951-2007.

Yeah. Derek Jeter will be "announced" by him from now until forever. They even did it for the All Star Game.

When you buy every single superstar out there, except for the few you leave for the Red Sox and maybe the Mets and Cubs, you better have the greatest baseball team ever.

I talked to Mom about it.

Jeter was interviewed regarding Steinbrenner since they were actually friends. He was asked if he had any good stories to tell. His answer was "yes but I couldn't tell those stories on tv"

we both agreed that those stories will probably never see the light of day either.

and yeah, i figured Bob Sheppard would still be announcing Derek Jeter. Mom said it was simply because Jeter loved how the man said his name. And Sheppard was well known for his enunciation and getting people's names right, even if they were unusual names.

^This. You don't have to like the guy or the fact that the NYY buy the best players, but no one makes ya watch the game Anyway, as a Yankee fan, RIP, George.

On the bright side, he can now fire Martin over and over again for all eternity.

You know I feel a little gypped, I post about Ernie Harwell dying and no one comments and yet people comment about this guy. Is it because of teams? Cause it can't be because of the sport.

He was a great announcer, the only problem being that he announced for Detroit and LA. Detroit isn't a huge market and though LA is good, not really as big a market. East coast teams get more news in sports.

If you ask random people who don't follow baseball to name one team, unless they live in a city where baseball is THE sport, the Yankees will be one of the most popular answers, not the Tigers.
