  • They just had the worst Luck

So a family of 5 comes in looking for a room. Apparently they came to my lovely island to visit and now are trapped. I know I complain about my long waits for the NL Ferry and how long the trips can be but it's nothing compared to this family.

They can't get a boat back to Newfoundland for TWO WEEKS!!!!

Worst of all they have a wedding to attend on the 24th. So they need to drive the long way around through New Brunswick and Quebec up to Labradour to get back home in time for the wedding.

Anyway, I give them a room and send them on their way.

They come back to tell me that, not only are there lights on in the room I sent them to, but the room is filthy with unmade beds and full ashtrays. I check and the room was supposed to be cleaned, but wasn't. We are having issues with Housekeeping that I will fill you all in on in another thread.

So I apologize, and switch them to another room. They come back and say their keys don't work. So I run back downstairs and try the outside door. Red and Yellow Light. Muttering, "uh-oh" I run back inside and try the inside door. It opens like a charm.

I was then sadly forced to explain to the family, that had asked for a driveup room, that their outside door was BROKEN. They kind of shook their heads, and said they would keep the room.

I just can't believe all their rotten luck.

Well patiokitty, they were driving their own car. So they couldn't just leave it in NS, and fly to NL. They would just have to come back and get it later anyway.

Hence them driving the long way around. I did find out they live in Lab City so it's not like they need to ferry into NL once they get to Labradour.

I still don't understand how they could get stuck here for two weeks. o.O

There isn't a bridge between Labrador and NL so they'd have to take a ferry. Yeah, we're the same provincial identity but there is a pretty big chunk of water in between them. The only way across with a car is via ferry...and unless the seas are absolutely horrible they shouldn't get stuck for two weeks. Something about their story isn't adding up right.
Hinakiba didn't say which island (s)he is on, but checking my atlas I suspect it's Cape Breton Island, rather than the island of Newfoundland. Having to drive via NB, PQ, and Labrador implies that (there are ferries from 2 points on Cape Breton, which is part of NS, to Newfoundland, but no PEI-NFLD ferry). If someone can't get a ferry from Cape Breton to Newfoundland, they would have to do the multi-province route (and if they want to get onto the island, take a short ferry ride from Labrador).

Wolfie is correct I live in CB. The family couldn't get a ferry out of North Sydney for two weeks.

They were probably going to originally take the North Sydney Ferry back to Port Aux Basques then drive to the Labradour ferry. But now they have to drive to Lab City the long mainland way.
